  1. Pak 139-9published at 15:34 British Summer Time 8 July 2021

Shaheen Afridi makes some room and smashes Brydon Carse over mid-on for four. He may as well have some fun here and has actually been one of the better Pakistan batsmen.

Carse comes back well with a short ball which Shaheen unconvincingly fences it away, the ball falling just short of point.

England have done very well at times, but I would say that 50% of the wickets feel like Pakistan giving them away.

  3. Pak 134-9published at 34 overs

Haris Rauf is the new batsman in.

This really has been a poor showing from the Pakistan team but there's one fan, who is sporting a green mohawk wig, who is still full of cheer as the camera pans to him.

I just don't think Pakistan look switched on. He's drilled it straight to the fielder, and if he thought the short ball was coming he should have known the angles.

Someone of his experience should have more awareness of where to place that shot.

  5. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 33.3 overs

    Shadab c Malan b Overton 30 (Pak 134-9)

Craig Overton bowls back of a length and Shadab Khan just can't resist the temptation to pull.

The batsman sends the ball straight to Dawid Malan at deep square leg and Pakistan lose their ninth wicket.

Good ball + bad batting = another Pakistan dismissal.

Jordan T: I hope England see what they've got in Mahmood and get him back in the red ball squad, he's showing incredible maturity and if you get him around the likes of Anderson, Broad and Woakes he could be something special!

  7. Pak 132-8published at 33 overs

Pakistan were looking to play some expansive shots before Hasan Ali departed but Shaheen and Shadab are happy to dab and defend, taking three from the over.

I didn't expect to see Alex Hales on the list. We know about him, we know what he brings and what he offers. We don't know what the situation is, but this provides an opportunity to Phil Salt and others.

I didn't expect it, but he might have hoped for an olive branch.

Brydon Carse will be bowling for England after the drinks break. I didn't think I'd be saying that last week.

There hasn't been much for Pakistan fans to cheer about this afternoon, but Fakhar Zaman did play some decent shots...

  11. How's stat?!published at 15:20 British Summer Time 8 July 2021

    Andy Zaltzman
    Test Match Special statistician

Matt Parkinson averages 46mph in his brief ODI career.

There are 21 leg spinners who have bowled 100 balls or more in ODI cricket in the last five years, and he is comfortably the slowest in terms of average speed.

All of the other 20 average over 50mph. The quickest is Rashid Khan at 56mph, the rest are normally all between 50 and 54mph.

  12. drinks break

    Drinks breakpublished at 32 overs

    Pak 129-8

Overton bangs in a few short deliveries which offer little threat to Shaheen Afridi and then he goes full, the Pakistan batsman calmly prodding it away.

One from the over and it's time for drinks.

Saqib Mahmood has just been 100% on the money. He's bowled with pace, accuracy and kept the ball in the danger area.

He's put his name in the hat, very much so.

On a side note, I wasn't sure why my vision is a bit off today. Then I remembered I bent my specs celebrating Harry Kane's winner last night.

Not been a bad 19 hours or so for English sport.

Craig Overton is back into the attack.

Saqib Mahmood has got a lot about him. You bring them through in white-ball cricket and perhaps they get a chance in red-ball cricket soon.

I'd like to see him in the Test side eventually. There will be a space or two available soon, you'd think. He has done his cause no problem at all today.

  16. Pak 128-8published at 31 overs

Mahmood to Shaheen and the Pakistan batter finds the gap with a solid drive through cover for three.

It's not a fiver-for but what a brilliant spell of bowling from Mahmood, who finishes with 4-42. He really set the tone with two wickets in the first three balls and has shown us all just why he is so highly rated by the England bigwigs.

Sri Lanka scored 185, 241 and 166 in their three ODIs against England.

Pakistan might well not make that many here.

  18. Pak 124-8published at 30 overs

    Shadab 26, Shaheen 0

Shaheen Afridi is the new batsman in. He's a real talen and I'm excited to see what he can do with the ball later in this match, but his team need him to dig in here.

Parkinson ends with a beauty which nearly finds the edge of Shaheen's bat.

That's poor - you know the trap has been set, it's the biggest boundary and Matt Parkinson isn't scared to give it some flight.
