Players down the order can really change the match in the modern game but this is a big ask.
This Pakistan pair are showing their intent, taking big old heaves at almost every delivery. Mahmood is wise to it, though, conceding five from the over. He's such a smart bowler.

It was a tough chance, Malan had to run a long, long way around.
Pak 118-7
The tourists should be eight down!
Pakistan look like they're only going to play one way as Hasan Ali pulls Parkinson to deep mid-wicket and Dawid Malan spills a tough chance.
Malan was on the run, he got both hands to it but just couldn't hold on as he helped the ball on its way to the boundary for four.

Swat is the perfect description of that shot. He whipped his hands through it.

What just happened there?
What's this then? Shadab Khan hoicks Parkinson over long-on for six.

A fourth wicket for Saqib Mahmood and another catch for John Simpson! Pakistan are in deep, deep trouble.
This is extraordinary from an England team who only met each other last night. Pakistan have been reduced to rubble.
Hasan Ali is the new man in and plays a wild swing at a wide delivery. He's as convincing as most of the batsmen who have preceded him today.
Mahmood's figures currently stand at 8-1-33-4.

It was that extra bit of zip and bounce from Mahmood that drew the edge. Simpson has looked at home behind the stumps. Mahmood has looked at home with ball in hand.
Faheem c Simpson b Mahmood 5 (Pak 101-7)
Saqib's on fire.
The England seamer goes short and angles it in, cramps up Faheem and the Pakistan batsman edges into the hands of Simpson behind the stumps.
That's four for Mahmood, what a game he's having.

That was an ugly heave but I'm not sure whether there was a nick or not.
Matt Parkinson floats it in and Shadab Khan takes a huge, ugly swipe across the line and is fortunate not to edge it.
A push into the off brings up the Pakistan hundred, and prompts a rare cheer from the away fans.

Paul Cotterill: Lancashire consistently use Parkinson to mop up the lower order, when his spin & variation outweighs his relative slowness through the air, which allows better batsman time to pick him. Be interesting to see if this applies here.
Nice one, Cal.
Are Pakistan the most unpredictable team in world sport? And this new England bunch aren't too shabby, eh?
Let's see what happens in the next 25 overs... if we get that far.
Decent over for Pakistan with five runs coming off it.
Saqib Mahmood has got through seven overs now. Will Ben Stokes hold him back, or just keep attacking?
I'm handing you over to Kal Sajad to tell you the answer.

The one I think who can benefit from this sudden call up is Zak Crawley. He had a torrid start to the international summer, he hasn't played much cricket and suddenly he's playing here.
It's not a T20 game so he can go out there and play in an orthodox manner, which is how he plays. He can gain a lot of confidence.
Faheem Ashraf gets off the mark with a cut through the covers for a couple.
A mention for John Simpson, behind the stumps too. I can't imagine he was expecting to ever play for England, considering their wicketkeeper depth, but he's been faultless so far.

In the big stand there’s someone screaming “NO RUN” every time a defensive prod is played. Is Marnus here?
