Utterly ridiculous. Cricket has to change! Players went off 22 mins ago, it's not raining, yet early lunch taken at 1:10 for FORTY MINUTES!!!! Why??! Tickets at £100 plus and we have one hour of no action because of five minutes of rain.

We've seen 18.4 overs of cricket today after rain bookened the morning session - and India have barely given England a sniff.

I'm going to predict that there's no more rain today. It looks a bit brighter beyond the pavilion.

The current situation: the covers are off, the groundstaff are working on the pitch... and the players are tucking into their cheese and pickle butties.

They've called lunch and it's stopped raining, obvs.

  6. It's lunchtimepublished at 13:04 British Summer Time 12 August 2021

Lunch is going to be taken by the players at 13:10 BST so that's the conclusion of the first session. Very attritional (and commendable) stuff from India's batsmen.

England haven't done a whole lot wrong with the ball. You could sense the nervous tension out in the middle, though. Patience and sticking to plans will be key for Joe Root and his bowlers.

Rohit Sharma is unbeaten on 35 from 66 balls, and 16 of them came from one over from Sam Curran.

There's a rustle in the Lord's crowd as sandwiches, packets of pork pies, sticky buns and various other edible treats are being unpacked from lunch boxes. No sign of an early lunch being taken by the players just yet, but that won't stop the crowd from tucking in.

A few brollies going up in the seats not under cover at Lord's but this doesn't look to be a major delay.

You have to give the Indian opening pair a huge amount of credit. They have played beautifully. They have battered circumspect, attritional and they've left well. It has been the perfect start for India in challenging conditions.

Oh the fickle England fan. Everyone raving about the India batters here but then Sibley does it and it's boring and slow! Suspicion of message favouritism from BBC here to stir the pot.

This will be good for England - a little bit of a breather and it breaks up the momentum of the India batsmen.

The covers are coming on. More unscheduled drizzle around.

  15. Ind 46-0published at 18.4 overs

Lots of chit-chatting and hob-nobbing by the MCC members in the pavilion - doubtless putting the world to rights, and how England should be taking wickets here.

Ollie Robinson almost strangles Rohit Sharma down the leg slide but there is no feather on it as Jos Buttler clasps the ball and scuttles away.

Re Ian, Cardiff 12:25. I have played in enough games in a weak batting team. I heartily commend Root's decision to put the opposition in to bat. Otherwise one finds the game is over by tea time.

Surefire sign things are not going England's way that they are grumbling about the ball in an attempt to get it changed, but it gets short shrift from the umpires.

James Anderson is bowling nice lines, but KL Rahul happy to plonk his foot outside off stump and tuck his bat behind his pad, or get it out in line to block anything straighter.

Sam Curran has played 23 Test matches now, so he is not a youngster any more in terms of caps, but he is bowling like a youngster. He is bowling like a schoolboy here, expecting Rohit Sharma to miss the one that is swinging back in.

He's got to be more consistent and patient on the fourth stump line and then the ball coming back in can be the surprise ball. He's been a little bit too predictable so far.

  19. Ind 44-0published at 17 overs

Sam Curran draws a deep breath having once again slid the ball into Rohit Sharma's pads. Whether this is an intention ploy to draw him front of his stumps, or not, Rohit flicks it away effortlessly for another four through fine leg.

Superbly measured stuff from India's openers, and Rohit in particular, so far.

Rohit Sharma has batted relatively serenely so far for India. Here's his first boundary of the day.
