  2. Eng 9-0published at 1 overs

    Trail by 69 runs

Hameed drives and an inside edge sends the ball whizzing past the leg stump. Ravindra Jadeja, perhaps the finest fielder in the game, dives full stretch to save the boundary.

Sharma ends a terrible over with one which goes down the leg side.

Bravo to the BBC scorecard for showing Ishant's economy as INFINITY after that first ball no-ball. Excellent detail!

Shot! Hameed sets himself and crunches the ball, off the back foot, for four.

India have played with no discipline whatsoever with the bat. And now with the ball, they start with two no balls.

  8. Eng 3-0published at 0.1 overs

Hameed shoulders his arms and lets it go by. And it's another no-ball from Sharma!

(P.S. Don't expect ball-by-ball updates throughout this innings. I've just got a bid giddy).

  10. 'India have batted appallingly'published at 15:08 British Summer Time 25 August 2021

I don't think Joe Root wanted to win the toss because he would have batted as well.

India have batted appallingly considering the amount of talent that they have in their changing room. KL Rahul set the tone with a poor drive, Virat Kohli with a poor stroke, Rishabh Pant with a nothing stroke, Rohit Sharma with a half-hearted pull shot, Ravindra Jadeja just missing a full straight delivery. They just haven't batted with any conviction.

Huge cheers as Burns tucks off the hips for a single! To make things better? It's a no-ball.

Now then, Haseeb Hameed, what can you do? Every England fan is rooting for you.

Is the 25th August England's favourite day to play Test cricket? All the evidence points to YES!!

It was vintage James Anderson, Craig Overton and Sam Curran were on hat-tricks and Ollie Robinson also bowled brilliantly.

Now then, can England's batsmen back up their bowlers' hard work? Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed are in the middle. Ishant Sharma has the ball.

    Andy Zaltzman
    Test Match Special statistician

India's 78 is their third-lowest total against England. It is their lowest since they were skittled for 42 at Lord's in 1974.

It is the lowest score by a team winning the toss and batting since New Zealand were bowled out for 45 in 2013.

In England it is the second lowest by a team winning the toss and batting in the last 63 years. Pakistan were bowled out for 72 at Edgbaston in 2010.

Harry Nye: It says a lot about my confidence in the England batting performance that my initial reaction to this dominant bowling performance is one of relief as it means we will at least avoid the follow-on.
