Hameed was lucky not to get an edge there. He didn't move his feet much and was just feeling for the ball.

Oh! Beaten. Haseeb Hameed, who is up to 20, has a little prod at one from Jasprit Bumrah. He was a bit stuck on the crease, and pulled his bat away after the ball passed the bat, trying to create the impression he didn't play at it. You did, Haseeb.
Bumrah finishes with a lovely off-cutter, with Hameed just has to pat back, as he was ready to play the big booming drive.

Listened to the winning runs on TMS at half-time of a bride v groom football match in Girona. The game was being played for surname, fortunately #teamgroom won!

Rory Burns defends the rest of the over.
There are still 32 overs left in the day by the way - weather, light and time permitting. We'll be going till 18:30 BST.

Good running!
Haseeb Hameed just leans on a defensive drive, and England scramble a single.
The throw is wild from India, and runs down to fine leg, resulting in "wheyyyyys" from the Western Terrace before they realise Rory Burns has run a bit too far to consider an overthrow.

Kumaran Ravendradas: A lot of people say Burns is an ungainly batsman but when he plays a cover drive he is easily one of the most elegant players to grace the game. Keep going England!

There are four people, dressed as seagulls, running around the stand, chasing someone dressed as chips. They all leap on him at the end. Only at the cricket, and only in England.
Back to the action and Rory Burns does really well to duck and weave a really well-directed bouncer from Jasprit Bumrah. He's probably been the pick of the India bowlers so far.
Bumrah is straying into the danger area from around the wicket, prompting Richard Kettleborough to have a word. It is just a polite word for now, rather than an official warning.

Benjy: To pile on Oliver’s optimism (16:18 BST), this has shades of the Boxing Day Test 2010. That was none down at stumps I believe.
James: I don’t know if it was the last time, but perhaps the finest moment of passing an opposition score without losing a wicket was Boxing Day 2010, in the 4th Ashes Test at the MCG. Australia 98 all out, England 157-0 in reply at close.

Oh, confusion! Get back! Rory Burns drops into the covers and sets off a single, before Haseeb Hameed sensibly sends him back. Cheteshwar Pujara was closing in, but his throw was a bit wayward anyway.
Shot! Mohammed Shami goes too full, and on the pads of Hameed, and he flicks it gloriously through mid-wicket. The trumpet starts up in the Western Terrace.

It's been a very solid start from England. We haven't said that for a while!

A maiden from Jasprit Bumrah. He squares Haseeb Hameed up a little bit to end the over, but the England opener is solidly in behind it.
Say it quietly, but there is nowhere near as much threat from the India pace bowlers so far.
That is getting carried away Oliver...

Oliver Camp: Not to get ahead of ourselves, when was the last time that England surpassed an opposition first innings total without losing a wicket?

A lovely cover drive from Burns, his weight was going into the ball and straight out of the middle of the bat. There are four men on the leg side so there's a lot of gaps for Burns to get runs through there.

Exquisite.
Mohammed Shami gets a little bit too full, and Rory Burns drives beautifully to the cover boundary.
Take that.

I think Rory Burns has been hit three times in the same place there. They've all missed the thigh pad - he'll have some bruises to show!

More probing from Jasprit Bumrah, at least making Rory Burns defend. Burns is unable to really work the ball away, thrice getting hit on the leg, but far too high to cause any real alarm.
He squirts one away, via the edge, just short of Ajinkya Rahane at leg slip. Virat Kohli has been changed the position of that man multiple times - more changes than in the Carabao Cup this week - and he had got him in the perfect position, but it was short and Burns takes a single.

I’d broken my leg just before the World Cup final and THAT innings was the first day out of the cast. Needless to say I jumped about screaming not caring what I did to my leg!

That is a lovely ball from Shami, one of his classics. He bowls with a perfect seam position.

Ooft! Beauty from Mohammed Shami.
He square Haseeb Hameed up - this is a bit of a weakness for the England opener - and there is a noise, but the ball flicks off the pocket of Hameed's trousers on the way through.
Something for Hameed to be wary of, though.
