He's played beautifully. He negated the early threat from India, looked very composed and confident at the crease. He's got England in a very good position and the game is moving on nicely.

It was an absolute beauty! It just spun past the outside edge. Hameed didn't move for a moment, he looked astonished.

    Hameed b Jadeja 68 (Eng 159-2)

The introduction of spin does the trick and Haseeb Hameed's fine knock comes to an end.

Ravindra Jadeja bowls a fantastic delivery. It's the perfect line. It bounces and turns away from the right-hander and clips the off stump.

In the name of exploration, I just absent-mindedly wandered into a posh area. You know the type. Middle-aged men in suits, a day out on the company, probably not entirely sure what cricket is. "Can I help you?" says one chap, seemingly horrified that my blue sweatshirt has entered his orbit.

That is beautifully driven by Dawid Malan. Any width and he just dispatches it.

  7. Eng 158-1published at 62 overs

Glorious! Dawid Malan is on the front foot and drives Mohammed Siraj through extra cover for four.

Having dealt exclusively in boundaries, Malan takes a single and moves to 17 off 29 balls.

Jasprit Bumrah has bowled four consecutive maidens to Haseeb Hameed, who has scored just three from his last 50 balls.

There is definitely more pace in the pitch today. Rishabh Pant was almost blown off his feet by that one.

  10. Eng 153-1published at 61 overs

Jasprit Bumrah is getting plenty of bounce off the turf, the ball carrying through well to Rishabh Pant behind the stumps.

Bumrah keeps the batsman thinking by varying his length, but Hameed is wise to to it. Maiden.

The biggest challenge for Dawid Malan is how he paces his innings. Since he last played Test cricket he has become such a good white-ball player.

    TIM, HOW COULD YOU?

You clearly just used us to make James in Basingstoke jealous. How could we fall for it?

In other news, there's no finger on lips scenario happening so far today as Siraj bowls down the leg side and it deflects off Malan's pads for four leg-byes .

Many thanks for the applications. James in Basingstoke has forgiven me as I said to the cricketing world that he knows a lot about sport. James in Basingstoke and Tim in Crewe will be at the Oval for the 3rd day.

The physio has left the field and we're good to continue.

Jasprit Bumrah goes fuller and into the pads of Hameed. The bowler appeals but it's clearly going down leg. It may well have missed a fourth stump.

Hameed goes fishing at one outside off. A good over for India but the England opener survives.

Dawid Malan is a great addition to this Test team. He has got a lot of runs in white-ball cricket and that is what this Test team needs at the moment - experience and confidence.

I really like him because he has a compact game.

That is the delivery that you want to bowl to Haseeb Hameed.

  18. ouch!

    Eng 149-1published at 58.2 overs

Ouch! Haseeb Hameed crouches down low to a Bumrah delivery which clatters into the helmet. The England opener signals to say he's fine but we'll go through all the necessary concussion checks.
