Play and a miss from Malan as Shami pitches it up.

So then... are we Team Tim or Team James? Should the apology be accepted? Or is the betrayal of a best friend one which can never be forgiven?

But more importantly, anyone fancy day three at The Oval with Tim? Send your applications in as to why you would make the perfect guest to join him. Tweet us on #bbccricket or text 81111 (standard message rates apply).

Yesterday I texted in on behalf of James in Basingstoke claiming he'd get a tattoo if England reached 79 without loss. All I can say is things got out of hand and James in Basingstoke is no longer returning my calls. We were supposed to be attending the third day at the Oval but I fear I may attend alone. This is particularly disappointing as I got a birthday present for James whose birthday is the following week. I hope a very public apology will bring James in Basingstoke round.

He didn't time it perfectly but Malan got a good stride in, moving his feet nicely.

The Haseed Hameed story is fascinating and one which I feel could have a real happy ending. He's such a gifted batsman.

Malan digs out a Bumrah yorker, a foot or so wide of the off stump, first up and is then off the mark with a textbook drive which races through cover for four.

The TV coverage is showing clips of Hameed being dismissed in county cricket when leaving the ball and being bowled.

He's played a couple of really good leaves in this Test so far - it's obviously a part of his game he has worked on.

Maiden to Shami. Time for Malan to now face his first ball.

There's just something about a solid forward defensive, isn't there? I don't think we celebrate it enough. It's a very reassuring sight.

Dawid Malan's last red-ball game came in June, here at Headingley, where he made 199. His last red-ball game before that one was in 2020 and he made 219.

  9. Eng 136-1published at 51 overs

Dawid Malan has had to wait three years to face his next Test delivery.

And he has to wait a little longer as Hameed confidently deals with five Bumrah balls and then takes a single off the sixth.

Dawid Malan is a driven personality and he likes to prepare for his runs. That is what you need at number three, someone who is a bit selfish. I have no qualms about someone who wants to hit lots and lots of balls in preparation.

He's got a chance to do well in these three Tests and get himself on the plane for Australia.

How lovely a platform is this for Dawid Malan? Pressure off, and the chance to play some shots. Bliss.

It was a loose shot from Burns. But there was some seam movement there from Shami. At Headingley, you've got to just hang in there on that full length as a bowler and it will give you something.

    Burns b Shami 61 (135-1)

Mohammed Shami strikes with a terrific delivery and the birthday boy is gone!

It's a classic plan which is executed perfectly. After two deliveries which shape away from Burns, Shami has one nipping back. It goes through the gate and clips the top of off stump.

What are India doing? How Jasprit Bumrah hasn't bowled at the start of the day when they're desperate for wickets is beyond me.

Poor bowling and solid batting has been the story of the morning so far...

There was some chat last night about the India team not being happy that a soft ball was thrown from the Western Terrace in the direction of boundary fielder Mohammed Siraj. Mohammed Shami has got the job of patrolling that part of the ground this morning. While sobriety reigns, it all seems good natured. He's just waved to what looks like a group of lifeguards.

That's the first time Hameed has been loose outside the off stump today. It's the type of ball he normally leaves so well.

KP thinks this is going to a fifth day?!

Ball of the morning! Ishant Sharma bowls a tidy line outside off and Hameed hangs his bat out. The closest India have got to finding the edge on day two.

    Burns and Hameed exchange singles.
