Woakes bowled with a bit of zip and intensity. No disrespect to Anderson and Robinson but it had been a bit pedestrian. Robinson is 4mph down on his pace from Headingley. The extra bit of oomph from Woakes has done the trick.

Ollie Robinson finds the ouside edge of KL Rahul's bat but the India opener plays with the soft hands and the ball doesn't carry through to the slip cordon.

Good little period for England this.

First-innings totals at The Oval in the last four Tests have been around the 300 to 350 mark. Most recently, Australia put England in and they made 294 and went on to win that match.

Root is furiously rubbing the ball on his trouser leg, trying his best to get it to play ball. It looks like perfect swing bowling conditions but just hasn't happened so far.

Rahul lifts English spirits by playing a wild drive to Robinson, missing the ball entirely.

The ball has barely moved so far. England have bowled nicely but India will be thinking 'if we can get to lunch without any loss we'll be in the box seat'. England just have to be patient now.

Rohit, having flicked a boundary off his pads in the previous over, pushes Anderson down the ground a couple of times. There hasn't been too much to get England excited so far.

Bowling coach Jon Lewis is having a chat with Robinson now. I'm sure it's nothing.

I wonder if it's going to be a Virat Kohli day. If he gets in and gets going. Can he finally get that hundred? The ball might move around but it's the kind of pitch where it bounces nicely and play the back foot shots nicely.

Well Robinson is continuing for now at least. Chris Woakes hasn't played a Test for more than a year after managing to find all number of ways to miss out. Maybe we'll get an early sight of him.

During that over Joe Root ran from first slip to tell mid-on Chris Woakes to get loose. Straight after, he jogged down to long leg to speak to Ollie Robinson. Something's going on.

This is the first Test at The Oval since a bonkers fifth Ashes Test way back in 2019.

I can't believe India have left out Ravichandran Ashwin again. Is there another Test team in the world who would leave out one of the best-ranked bowlers in the world?

I reckon a few England batters are happy Ashwin isn't playing. He's number two in the world bowling rankings remember.
