The floodlights are on, which gives you a feel for what it's like. I would imagine without them we wouldn't be playing.

A nudge to the leg side from Rohit gets India away. A quiet start. The Oval is filling up nicely.

It's a good toss to win for England. It's overcast and there is a touch of green. I think this England side just looks to be getting better and better in terms of the makeup of it. With back-to-back Test matches there is no time to absorb anything - this could be another cracking match.
Jonny Bairstow is back as wicketkeeper with Jos Buttler away for the birth of his second child. He takes the first few deliveries calmly around hip height as Anderson finds a hint of swing.
Rohit leaves.

One of the problems for India with the bat this summer is their players are all getting out the same way. Rohit Sharma out pulling, KL Rahul driving on the front foot, Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli around that channel, while Rishabh Pant has not found his flamboyancy it. England will bowl in those areas again. Will India know when to leave?
Craig Overton is yawning at slip. A lovely start.
Jimmy Anderson has the ball in hand.
Here we go...
The England players come together in a huddle after the anthems with Joe Root giving as pep talk. Most of the players have their thick sweaters on.
Kl Rahul and Rohit Sharma take one or two disapproving looks to the clouds as they wander out.

Harry Holliday: Cloudy skies, Woakes back in the team, no Ashwin.... I'm feeling good about this morning!

England's bowlers will put the ball on that challenging line and length. India's openers just have to try to hang in there and the bottom line is they need to give that first session to the bowlers. Then you can see how it goes.
A lovely photo of those two boxes from Stephan there.
The players are out on the field - England dressed in their anti-discrimination T-shirts.
Time for the anthems.

BBC Sport at the Kia Oval
Lord's is historic, Headingley storied. Trent Bridge is intimate, Old Trafford and Edgbaston rowdy. For me, though, The Oval is the best place to watch Test cricket in this country. It takes the best bits of all the others and combines them for a little bit of cricketing perfection. It's got the best press box, too...
BBC Weather's Nick Miller: "We are carrying over the Headingley weather with the clouds. It's a story of getting brighter and sunnier as the Test match goes on. We are starting with the cloud today, Friday and Saturday, although after today things should get a little bit brighter.
"There may be the odd spot of light rain and drizzle - possibly the odd shower around but essentially it's a dry story. The temperatures will get up to 20C or 21C.
"The change will come on Sunday and Monday when we have summer's last hurrah with more sunshine and rising temperatures."
We're told it's not going to rain but there's thick cloud above and the floodlights are on. It looks a lovely morning for bowling.

This isn't a toss where you win it and automatically think England are going to go on and win the game. It will swing early on but if India can play with control early on they can get a score. If they get 280 or 300 we know England's batsmen struggle when put under pressure. They were fortunate at Headingley when they were taking guard and there is on 70-odd on the scoreboard.
I reckon he fancies it...

If I'd have been India I would have changed that batting line-up. Just to give England something different to think about. It does feel like perfect bowling conditions but if India can get through this opening session and bat the day out, they will be right into this Test match.
Just as England had to win that first session at Headingley, India have to fight back and win this first session at The Oval.

Darren Fox: Love that, win the toss and bowl.
Aaron Campbell: England now look stronger with Woakes back, more depth in the batting & strength in the bowling. What are India doing with their selection? Ashwin? Madness!
Jambarrell: Aside from not having Stokes and Broad, I actually think this is our strongest team right now - good selection!
India captain Virat Kohli on Sky Sports: "Not a problem to bat first. We would have bowled first but the toss is not something you can control. We are looking to batting now and put runs on the board."
On the non-selection of Ravichandran Ashwin: "England have four left-handers and we thought it is a good match-up for Ravindra Jadeja along with the seam bowlers. Plus the balance Jadeja gives us with the bat is important.
"We have a few days left on this tour. The series is poised, a lot to play for, and it's always exciting to play Test cricket for your country."
England captain Joe Root on Sky Sports: "We're going to try and make use of the overhead conditions - it looks like a nice morning for bowling. We'll still have to find those lengths early like we did at Headingley and make early inroads like we did there and carry that momentum forward."
On selecting Ollie Pope over Dan Lawrence: "It was a really tough decision - they're two very talented players. Ollie gets the opportunity this week so hopefully he can make the most of it and score some runs."
