Bairstow just needs to hang in there and not do anything silly.
Time for some liquid refreshment.
A fraction short from Mohammed Siraj and Jonny Bairstow guides it through backward point, only for a superb diving stop from Ravindra Jadeja to prevent it going through to the boundary.
India have backed up their bowlers superbly in the field today.

A chap along from me has gone early with his lunch - it's always the way at the cricket, you know the food is there and you can't help yourself, like when you were on a school field trip and had eaten everything before you were off the bus. In this particular picnic, our man is having terrible trouble with his mini sausages. He can't get them open. He's trying everything. Pretty sure he's going to have to stab the plastic with his door key.

The 13 wickets to fall on day one was the joint-most in an Oval Test first day since 1926, the other being England v New Zealand in 1983.
We'll fit one more in before drinks with Mohammed Siraj brought on from the Vauxhall End.
A drive from Ollie Pope off Shardul Thakur squirts to point. India's fielders yelp in excitement.
Next ball Pope is stout with his defence. He ends the over with a nice clip off his pads through mid-wicket for a couple.

If we're still batting by tea, I'll get Kohli's face tattooed on my cheek!

Shardul Thakur set to come into the attack for India just before drinks.

Those extra runs by Thakur are looking more crucial for every wicket England lose.

Jasprit Burmah bangs it in short and Ollie Pope takes on the hook. He's got some bat on it, a top edge, on to the grill of his helmet and the ball races away over the wicketkeeper's head for four.
Every run vital for England, now.
Here's how Craig Overton, attempting a flashy cut shot, was dismissed at the start of the morning.
A couple of loose deliveries from Umesh Yadav and so much-needed runs for England. Ollie Pope punishes a half-volley and runs three, and Jonny Bairstow does likewise to a similar delivery and picks up a boundary.

There's a little bit of movement there for the bowlers, but I think we just have two batting units that are vulnerable and not playing with a great deal of confidence. They are not trusting themselves to bat for a long of period of time so go searching for runs.
Jonny Bairstow defends and leaves carefully to Jasprit Bumrah. Just one run off the over. He's wicketless so far today but has been miserely and threatening.

The England batting line-up is rather like a wobbly tree. Without a Root in the ground, it's prone to toppling over.
Robert in Suffolk
Jasprit Bumrah blows his cheeks out and makes a jagging motion with his arm, finger pointed at a diagonal angle. He wants that ball to start talking off a length.
Ollie Pope pushes a single to get Jonny Bairstow back on strike

If you've got tickets for day four, you may be having a day in the park.

Elenoire: Difficult to envisage England not being all out by the end of the day now (if not by tea).
Joe Redmond: England going well with the bat lasted just the one innings then?
