I'm am not a test cricket captain (obviously). But if I was Root, I would simply say to Hameed and Burns: "you are top batsmen who love batting. You have a day and a a bit to simply do what you love in some fantastic summer weather for as long as you like. Go and make the most of it!"

If I had my way I'd ban messages suggesting England throw white-ball players up the order for six months.

Haseeb Hameed, meanwhile, has just cut Bumrah brilliantly for four.

Severnsider: Send in Bairstow and Woakes next two wickets down. See if they can whack 100 plus runs by stumps then it's game on. No point attempting to bat out a draw.

Jasprit Bumrah is back. Four words that aren't ideal for England fans given the situation.

If you said to England now, 'would you take a draw?', they would.

Rory Burns has done it again, this time off Ravindra Jadeja!

Rory Burns hammers a pull off Umesh Yadav to the fence. One to boost the confidence of a nation. It has been a decent start from the two openers.

I'm willing to go with it, Andrew. Has anyone used any other superstitions to help England in similar situations in the past?

It's not a superstition but I remember coming home on the final day of the 2005 series to find my Dad a nervous wreck having filled a sheet of A4 with all sorts of required run-rate scenarios for what Australia would need should England have been dismissed.

Andrew Stone: A few nights ago I dreamt that Rory Burns scored a century while batting in a car park against Shane Warne. However, England fans looking for good omens should be aware that I also reached double figures, throwing its veracity into further doubt.

If it does go all the way tomorrow then it's going to be a tense one. There's nothing like watching a team attempting to bat out a final day in any other sport. There won't be a lot of work being done.

Pete Hardy: Hey England just be 30-0 at the close. I don't care about the runs but I do want you to bat all day tomorrow for the draw. Think of the series decider in Manchester.

The first ball tells you how things may well be for the next 24 hours or so. Jadeja gets it to spit to Burns, resulting in a lot of hopping around and chatter behind the stumps. Kohli is as animated as ever.

It's flat, the ball's going through to Pant slowly. Jadeja will be key, and they might get some reverse swing at some stage.

And Jadeja is coming into the attack after just seven overs. There is a bit of rough stuff outside Rory Burns' stumps.

India have not made England play enough with the new ball. But 368 seems a long way away.

Thanks Callum. Things have changed since I left you at lunch time but we saw at the start of India's second innings what two openers surviving until the close can do.

    Umesh Yadav continues.

I've wrapped up the India innings, and successfully seen off six overs of the new ball.

That is my work done. Time for me to go and be a nervous watcher like you lot.

Matt Henry will take you through to close.

    Target 368

England's running has been good so far. It has been positive, and that is good to see. They pick up three as Rory Burns works through mid-wicket.

Jasprit Bumrah's line to Haseeb Hameed is starting to go in the right direction, but twice the England opener works him off his pads for a single.
