  1. SL 121-6published at 41 overs

    Dom Bess 8-1-30-2

England have bowled well today, but there's still improvement to be found, particularly from the spinners.

Dom Bess in particular has struggled to be consistent with his length and line. He goes too full and Wanindu Hasaranga crunches him through the covers, before he mistimes a drive over mid-on.

Hasaranga's strike-rate in those two Tests is over 90, so he's probably going to take the attack to England here.

Ermmm... there's some rain in the air and the groundstaff are hovering by the boundary edge.

I managed 3 ducks in 3 successive days playing over a Bank Holiday Weekend. I had put it out of mind until Mendis awoke the dragon. #scarred.

Wanindu Hasaranga is in alongside Dasun Shanaka now.

He averages 30.5 and has a top score of 59 from his two Tests and Sri Lanka could really do with him getting at least that today.

Just three from Jack Leach's latest over.

That was a better ball from Bess - there was some snap in that one and some turn.

The batting from Sri Lanka today has been absolutely diabolical. You go through the dismissals and England won't be able to believe their luck. Very, very poor from Sri Lanka.

  8. SL 110-6published at 39 overs

The worrying news for Sri Lanka is it is their batting that is meant to be experienced and therefore, in theory, more reliable. That doesn't bode well because this batting display has been abysmal.

We've criticised England many a time for not understanding the art of Test match batting and I think it's pretty fair to direct those word at Sri Lanka today.

There's almost another wicket as Dasun Shanaka flicks one just wide of leg slip.

That is absolutely remarkable! I'm afraid that is a club cricket dismissal. An absolute shocker.

    Dickwella c Sibley b Bess 12 (SL 105-6)

    That is a filthy dismissal!

It's an absolute drag down from Dom Bess, we're talking half way down the pitch bad, and Niroshan Dickwella just slaps it to Dom Sibley at point.

Sibley doesn't pick it up initially and he's grateful it sort of just lands in his hands.

Sri Lanka have been woeful to be honest.

I'd say it's up there, Lee, but how many balls did you face? If you were hidden at the non-striker's end it's not even close.

I once got a 13 over duck, opening in a 50 over game. That felt like 6 ducks in one go... does that count?

  15. drinks break

    SL 105-5published at 38 overs

That'll be drinks after Sri Lanka take three off Jack Leach's latest over.

England will be happy with that hour - they've taken two wickets. And we've managed to get 14 overs in, which is a positive compared to the issues we had this morning with delays left, right and centre.

    Shanaka 12, Dickwella 9

Niroshan Dickwella has looked pretty good so far and he picks up three more with a nice push through the covers.

Mark Wood is slightly down on pace from the morning, but he's still up at 90mph, as Dasun Shanaka initially looks set to play a pull shot but does well to sway out the way in the end. That was a well-directed bouncer by Wood.

I once scored 5 ducks in a row. The frantic applause from the pavilion when I got a streaky single off the mark in the next game prompted the opposition to ask if that was 1000 runs for the season. I wish!

    John Grundy, Oxford

Has anybody got six in a row?

  19. SL 97-5published at 36 overs

This is the first time I've watched Dasun Shanaka play and I'll be honest, it's easy to see why he only averages 14.

It's all a bit ugly as he gets on one knee and heaves a slog-sweep away. He left a lot of his stumps exposed there, and if the ball does anything, literally anything, he is in big trouble.

Sri Lanka needed both Dimesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews to go on and build on their starts.
