Leach has finally got Chandimal! That's another loose shot - what he was doing, I do not know.

    Chandimal c Curran b Leach 28 (SL 81-5)

    Soft, soft, soft.

It's tossed up by Jack Leach, and stand-in captain Dinesh Chandimal can't resist a big booming drive, and again, similarly to pre-lunch when Dan Lawrence dropped it, he spoons it and it's taken leaping forward by Sam Curran.

That's Jack Leach's first Test wicket since November 2019.

Stuart Broad is a dream for a captain. Just the man in these type of conditions.

That is the breakthrough! Mathews threw his hands at it and that's the risk of trying to get momentum back into an innings. Root took a very sharp catch.

  5. wicket

    Mathews c Root b Broad 27 (SL 81-4)

Broady was panting but he's happy now!

I was just about to say that after three overs Stuart Broad may be done for this spell, he was having to take a good old breath between deliveries but that'll help his mood.

It's a bit loose from Mathews, as he takes a wild slash at a ball on fifth or sixth stump, and Joe Root, at first slip, takes a sharp catch around rib height.

    Big wicket for England.

The pitch is taking pieces. There's turn and bounce - not slow, dying spin; it's got a kick to it. When you see that as a spin bowler, it's lovely to drop into a line and length and let things happen.

I'm seeing a little bit more turn than I expected at his stage of the game. There's a bit of soil coming off and a puff of dust.

  8. SL 80-3published at 28 overs

Better control from Jack Leach in his second over post lunch with just a single conceded.

There's enough in this wicket for England, they just need to be patient.

We might come to a point where we see the entire cordon on the leg side. Broad ran his fingers on the ball - that cutter he bowls so well - and it leapt at Chandimal.

  10. SL 79-3published at 27 overs

That is an absolute beauty from Stuart Broad, and the hands are out over the mouth again.

He gets a little bit of extra bounce, Dinesh Chandimal doesn't play it particularly well, and it loops up wide of leg slip.

    Broad has been excellent again.

Both spinners will be disappointed with their consistency of length. I can understand it.

That was right in the slot - and Mathews duly obliged.

    Shot!

Jack Leach is a tad full and Angelo Mathews just plants him back down the ground for the first six of the Test. That brings up the 50 partnership between these two as well - Sri Lanka needed it.

Expensive over from Leach with nine coming off it.

The boundary took Angelo Mathews past 6,000 runs in Test cricket. He made his debut in 2009. He is the fifth Sri Lankan to reach the landmark.

Stuart Broad is bringing out the variations. He's rolling his fingers over the seam almost every delivery.

He's getting a little bit of grip out of the surface as Angelo Mathews plays with soft hands and guides through the vacant slip cordon for four.

That brings up Mathews' 6,000th run in Test cricket. He is the fifth Sri Lankan to reach the landmark.

It was a good start by England - they were gifts by the Sri Lankan batsmen. If Dan Lawrence could have hung on to Chandimal, what a session it would have been for England.

The players are back out in the middle, and Stuart Broad, who took 2-14 this morning, is going to get us under way.
