Joe Root's side have taken 2-28 from 11 overs in this session. They are well and truly on top.

  3. SL 93-5published at 34 overs

Adventurous from Dasun Shanaka as he steps down the track and plinks a drive over mid-on for his first boundary.

Attack may be the best form of defence for these two. The England bowlers are too good to not cause them issues along the way.

My cricket career was pretty short-lived - I think I only got one duck.

I remember it was a run-out, during a school match at a different school, and I tried to dive and make my ground from at least halfway down the track.

    Did not end well.

More than four ducks in a row?published at 07:54 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2021

Tom Hanson: Poor old Mendis. I once got 4 ducks in a row. The fine was if I got 5 in a row, I had to get the Olympic rings (5 zeros) tattooed on my leg. Never been so happy to get a nervy single! Wonder if Sri Lanka have the same fine in place?

  6. SL 89-5published at 33 overs

Mark Wood strays a little bit off the final delivery of the over and Niroshan Dickwella flicks him fine for his first boundary.

The Sri Lanka keeper averages 30 in Test cricket and has got 15 half-centuries but is yet to convert one. The hosts could do with him changing that pretty sharpish.

  7. SL 84-5published at 32.1 overs

And as I publish that Niroshan Dickwella nudges a single to get off the mark.

  8. Postpublished at 07:49 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2021

The express pace of Mark Wood is coming back into the attack. He got up to 93mph in the opening session.

Him v Dickwella could be box office.

I would be excited but until England bat, and don't collapse, I'll reserve judgement.

Sri Lanka are really under pressure.

  14. SL 83-5published at 31 overs

    A maiden for Stuart Broad.

He's disappointed though as a thick inside edge lobs up into the air, but it drops well short of the short mid-on. If England had a short leg they'd probably have a sixth wicket now.

That will probably be the last we see of Broad for a while.

  15. Postpublished at 07:41 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2021

Stuart Broad is going to dig deep and bowl his fourth over of the spell.

Temperatures are touching 30C in Galle.

Can we get the stats on winning the toss and winning the game at Galle? Guessing it's worrying reading for England fans (particularly those of us who woke up at 4:30 and saw Broad with the new ball).

Dasun Shanaka gets off the mark with a squirted couple through backward point.

That's just the start England will have wanted to the afternoon, though. They'll have spoken about breaking the partnership, so to get both Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal will delight Joe Root.

  19. Postpublished at 07:39 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2021

Dasun Shanaka is the new batsman - he averages 14 in five Tests.

England could be batting by the end of this session...
