Thirimanne now has his highest score since 2013.

  4. SL 151-1published at 55 overs

    Thirimanne 73, K Mendis 13

An easy three for Lahiru Thirimanne as Dom Bess serves up a juicy full toss. This partnership is creeping towards the 50 mark.

Another horrible short ball is not quite dealt with by Kusal Mendis, who almost does the splits as he tries to swat it away, and a pricey over ends with a dot.

I travelled south to my youngest sister's wedding in 2019. She was marrying an international cricketer. So as a huge cricket fan I was quite excited by the guest list. So here goes: Jimmy Anderson, Jos Butler, Ben Stokes, Joe Root, Stuart Broad (fellow Forest fan), Eoin Morgan, Sir Alastair plus some excellent county pros and ex-players. My sister put me next to Jimmy Adams (ex-Hants captain) at the reception meal as she said we'd get on. She wasn't wrong - top man. I was a bit awe struck to be honest at the start but kept it together as you'd expect from a 48-year-old man. Watching them at beyond midnight on the dance floor made me realise they were just young men having a great time. It was a great day.

  6. SL 145-1published at 54 overs

A nonsense full toss from Jack Leach and Kusal Mendis obligingly wallops it for four.

That was a Kumar Sangakkara-style drive. Thirimanne has played really well.

Shot! Lahiru Thirimanne latches onto a short ball from Dom Bess and drives it with aplomb through extra cover, sending the birds in the deep scattering to the skies.

Now the short leg has come in. The horse has bolted.

  11. SL 135-1published at 52 overs

On TMS, Michael Vaughan is grumbling about the field to Kusal Mendis - you would stick a few more people around the bat, surely?

That is a maiden for Jack Leach.

Can I include Bobby Moore (Essex did offer him a contract)? Walked into the living room at a Christmas party in Chingford (c.1980) and he was sitting in the "Dad" armchair, surrounded by children. Such a lovely man.

    Mendis 7, Thirimanne 63

There are 24 overs left in the day, for those of you wondering.

Sri Lanka have just equalled their first innings score but this time they've only just one wicket. An improvement, I think it's fair to say.

I wonder if it is worth England dangling the carrot outside off stump. Pack the field with catchers on the off side.

Just the 46 dot balls from Stuart Broad in his eight overs so far. Terrific going.

Jack Leach has got to continue what he is doing. It's been disappointing today from Dom Bess. For the seamers, there's no bounce, no seam, no grip for the cutters.
