  2. 'The game plan was executed brilliantly'published at 08:58 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2021

More from Joe Root talking to Channel 4: "It has been a fantastic five days really. We executed the game plan brilliantly. We’ll enjoy this for sure but we know there’s challenges to come.

"It’s a brilliant performance from the whole bowlers group. The key here isn’t to put too much pressure on individuals and it’s do it collectively.

"Sri Lanka gave us confidence, but we knew the challenges would be different. The surface was different and we handled it well. It will be different again for the next game and we’ve still got room for improvement which is really exciting. We expect India to come back hard at us."

On winning six consecutive away Tests: "It has been a lot of hard work and willingness to learn and improve their game. We’ve done it consistently but the challenge is to come back and do it again next week. We’ve got young players who are having to learn on the job. Look at Dom Sibley, he has played fantastically well in difficult conditions. That’s the mindset of the changing room, and long may it continue. It’s important we don’t stand still now and keep looking to get better."

From an India perspective - they surely can't be any worse in the second Test that starts at the same venue on Saturday.

They were ill disciplined in the field this week, and didn't some the determination and character needed to bat for long periods in Test cricket.

Virat Kohli has now lost four successive Tests as captain, and this was India's first home defeat since February 2017.

    Is he under pressure?

England have dominated the whole five days. They didn't let India win even one session. Winning the toss was important but just by winning a toss you don't win a Test match.

They will carry a lot of confidence. India fell short by a long, long way. They need to get their team combination and mentality right. Virat Kohli will be under pressure after a fourth consecutive loss. Rahane will be under pressure too, he hasn't scored any runs.

James Anderson then had Rishabh Pant caught in the covers, before Dom Bess had Washington Sundar caught behind for a duck.

Virat Kohli, who was eventually bowled by Ben Stokes for 72, guided India to lunch alongside Ravichandran Ashwin.

England had to be patient after the interval but eventually took the final four wickets in 6.5 overs to complete a massive victory and take a 1-0 series lead in the four-Test series.

Joe and I played at the same club, same county, we even played with the same bat at times. He kind of copied me but he's a bit better than me. Everytime he copied me he's done it better. He can end up with an amount of Test victories as captain which could potentially never be passed.

In case you're just waking up England have wrapped up a 227-run win after just 45.1 overs of day five.

Jack Leach took 4-76 including the key wicket of Cheteshwar Pujara at the start of the day, before James Anderson produced one of the all-time great Test overs to remove Shubman Gill and Ajinkya Rahane.

It has sort of been forgotten in the buzz and praise of England's performance that this was Joe Root's 100th Test match.

To score 218 runs and to lead your side to a 227-run win - does it get any better?

Now the pressure is on. They played so well, can they do it again next week? The toss will be so important. If they win the toss and bat first, it could sway the series. They know the pitch will deteriorate and will reverse-swing. If they don't, they know it will be difficult.

India will get better, we know that. But winning a Test series in India, when Alastair Cook did it, I put it as one of England's best ever victories.

It's almost impossible to win a Test series in India so surely Buttler would want to be a part of it?

  13. 'The bowlers handled the pressure well'published at 08:40 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2021

More from Joe Root at the post-match presentation: "The idea was to get a lead of 400 and then speed up, but it didn't materialise like that but having spent time out there we knew the wicket was changing. The most important thing was making sure India winning was out of the equation and then creating 10 chances and that worked out well today.

"As a bowling group we didn't want to worry about the run-rate with how fast the outfield is and how small the ground is. It was about just wanting to take 10 wickets. The guys handled the pressure well."

On James Anderson: "He is the GOAT of English cricket. He finds ways of constantly challenging himself and getting better. At 38 to still be getting better and be as fit as ever is fantastic - he is a great role model. His skill level is as good as anyone you'll ever see."

  14. 'Big partnerships & contributions is how to win out here'published at 08:38 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2021

England captain Joe Root, who scored 218, at the post-match presentation: "It was a crucial toss but from that moment onwards we needed to make the most of it and we did that very well. We batted well and the bowlers, in conditions that are alien to them, they bowled very well.

"We knew it would be a good wicket. The first partnership was crucial and it was about making big contributions and partnerships being valuable. At different times guys came in and made contributions and thankfully it was me who made a big one.

"That is the way we are going to win out there. Someone is going to have to do that consistently - it might be someone else next week, but collectively we've got to do it. India are going to come back strong, they are a proud team with a strong record at home."

  15. 'An absolute stellar, bossing performance'published at 08:35 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2021

    Prakash Wakankar
    Commentator on The Cricket Social

I did feel this was going to be over before tea. Deteriorating wicket, not a great deal of application from India and an England team who clearly knew there was no way they were going to lose this game.

I'm pleased to see Pant do well, Kohli showing he's getting into a bit of touch. But Rahane's poor form is concerning.

But it's been an absolute stellar, bossing performance from England.

Jack Leach is my new favourite. His character epitomises everything about this England team in Test cricket.

  17. 'I thought we were playing in the IPL'published at 08:33 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2021

England spinner Jack Leach, who took 4-76, talking on Channel 4: "It’s my first time in India - they’ve got a great batting line-up so I knew the pressure that came with it but I’m so glad to take wickets and get the boys over the line.

"Sri Lanka was really important. I’d had a long time without much cricket so it was about getting overs in and getting used to those overs in my legs. I feel like I’m still getting back to my best, but I’m getting there so it’s good."

On being attacked by Rishabh Pant in the first innings: "I thought we were playing in the IPL – it was a challenge definitely. As a spinner you’ve got expect that but you’re never going to enjoy it. It was about being strong and the boys really helped me. It was a tough evening that night but I’m glad to come back."

Does his experience of winning games at Taunton help: "There are moments where I feel like I can use what I’ve done in the past to know when I need to sit in or where I can take a few more risks. It was a real team effort to get the win."

India captain Virat Kohli at the post-match presentation: "We didn't put enough pressure on England. At the end of the day it is the mindset of if you feel good, you can bat well and bowl well and that is something we need to get back into. There will be hiccups, but we are always a side that are looking to improve. We'll be looking to bounce back."
