  1. 'A 10/10 performance'published at 08:28 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2021

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on The Cricket Social

I still don't think England batted great in the last session last night but it's not about that, it's about how well they've played over the Test. This has been a 10/10 performance.

England have been magnificent but you will feel they will still think there is room for improvement.

They will be disappointed by some of their dismissals in the first innings and the inconsistency of Dom Bess in the second innings will be of concern, but in such alien conditions, most of those players have never toured India before, to produce that performance, having been in quarantine for six days and no warm-up games is spectacular.

As Michael Vaughan says England have just found a way under Chris Silverwood and Joe Root. They can win games without being 100%. That is an encouraging sign.

Joe Root is a wonderful player and a fantastic captain. It's taking him time, this last year and a half Chris Silverwood has given him a boost. They've worked out a formula to play Test cricket.

  5. 'It's been a hard graft'published at 08:22 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2021

James Anderson, who took 3-17, talking to Channel 4: "It came out well. There was a bit of reverse. It was just about getting as many balls in the right pace as possible and I got a bit of luck with the bounce on some.

"The movement makes you feel in the game. The pitch was quite slow and the movement in the air just makes it so much better for the seamers and makes you feel like you can take a wicket with every ball.

"I feel great. I’m glad to take my form forward from Sri Lanka. I was glad to get the nod this week, we’ve got a great squad and we’re progressing really well."

On potentially being rested next week: "It’s been a hard graft this week to be honest - it wasn't an easy pitch to bowl on. We’ve got to rest well for three days now and come back hard then."

On Joe Root: "He has been incredible. He really does lead the team from the front and lead by example. Hopefully he can continue the form and a few other guys can chip in along the way."

A lot of praise will deservedly go to James Anderson today for that magnificent over where he removed Shubman Gill and Ajinkya Rahane, but I want to mention Jack Leach too.

He was smashed all over the place by Rishabh Pant in the first innings, but even without that, he was had an extremely difficult 16 months with illness and then being second choice during the summer.

Over the 58.1 overs of the India innings he has made a crucial part in England's victory. He picked up key wickets in Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara too.

I just wish England would change their mind and let Jos Buttler play the second Test. This is special. I get the bubble and they need time back at home but when you've just gone 1-0 up and are playing at the same venue in a few days time, surely you want to go with the same team?

England are now technically top of the World Test Championship table...

They need to win the series either 3-0, 3-1 or 4-0 to reach the final alongside New Zealand in late June. This has been the perfect start.

  11. 'England have got something going'published at 08:07 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2021

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on The Cricket Social

England aren't over celebrating which I like to see. In the back of their mind they want to jump around, hug each other and high five. They're very controlled, which they have been all Test.

The England team have got something going. They're playing the right way. Now the pressure is on because we expect it every week and it probably won't be possible in the next few weeks in these conditions.

  12. Postpublished at 08:07 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2021

We can firmly file the last five days under "things you love to see".

England have been magnificent. They are unbeaten in 11 Tests under Joe Root's captaincy, and won nine of their 15 Tests since Chris Silverwood took over as head coach.

There it is! England win by a mammoth 227 runs.

There's a little bit of movement away from Jofra Archer and Jasprit Bumrah gets an edge through to Jos Buttler.

What a performance from England. They go 1-0 up in the four-Test series and England have now won six successive Tests away from home.

  14. 'England haven't allowed India to come to the races'published at 08:03 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2021

You know with Anderson that he has so much skill and experience. Many years ago we were talking about Jimmy not being able to bowl overseas but he's got a better record than many. He's got the gift.

There's many teams that win the toss in these conditions and don't maximise it and get as many runs. England haven't allowed India to come to the races.

India have looked as if they've played like individuals.

Four more. It is heaved to the square leg boundary by Ishant Sharma this time.

Can Jack Leach pick up his third five-wicket haul in Test cricket?

David: We were all wrong yesterday. England going to win with loads of time to spare.

Mark: England left ruing the decision to bat so long yesterday as they leave themselves just 47 overs to take the last Indian wicket.

It's like W.G Grace, the wind has blown it off. Oh, wait, it has. What on earth made the bail fall off? I'm assuming it was the off stump which was ripped out twice by Anderson this morning and it's left a bit of a hole. The stump has rocked back. What an incredible thing.

  19. Ind 188-9published at 57 overs

I have no absolutely no idea what has happened there. The off stump was skewed back like Ishant Sharma had stepped on his stumps.

It's not like Old Trafford or somewhere in England where we often have to turn to the heavy bails because of the wind.

  20. Not outpublished at 07:58 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2021

    He hasn't...

One of the bails has just fallen off, and the stumps broken.

How on earth has that happened!?!
