I think the hyperbole around Anderson is justified on this occasion. It is difficult to use to statistics to back-up 'great overs' but the last time anyone dismissed two top six batsman against India was Makhaya Ntini in 2008.

I have no idea how India and Ravichandran Ashwin are going to play this.

He has a tentative prod at one outside off stump before edging through second slip for four.

It is brilliant for a captain that you feel everyone can contribute with the ball. Archer has steamed in and looked very threatening. When I was there in 1992 it was almost like there was no point in the seamers bowling.

Anderson starts with a wayward one down the leg side.

    He is human.

It will be the GOAT, James Anderson, from the other end.

    He can't, can he?

To come and bowl that over - Anderson's first of the day - get the line immediately right, bowl two batsmen in identical fashion is outstanding.

It was going to take something special to knock Gill over. What an over that was from Anderson. It was one of the best I have seen in a very long time.

  12. 'Anderson getting better and better'published at 06:35 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2021

I didn't expect five wickets in the first session! England must be absolutely delighted. The Pujara wicket was key. England know how he can get stuck in.

Anderson showed the skill and mastery he has. He just seems to get better and better.

I know this happens in every era but we haven't half got a lot of GOATs at the moment.

James Anderson, Steve Smith, Virat Kohli in cricket. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in football. Lewis Hamilton in F1. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams in tennis. Simone Biles in Gymnastics. Tom Brady in NFL.

    Enjoy it.

If you want more details and reaction to the most magnificent over from James Anderson then Matt Henry has put this terrific piece together.

You know how Freddie Flintoff's overs against Jacques Kallis in 2008, and Ricky Ponting in 2005, just randomly pop up on social media every so often?

This over from Anderson will be doing that on a social media platform, that probably doesn't even exist yet, in 10-15 years' time.

Well, if you're just waking up where have you been? England are been very, very good this morning and are closing in on a fantastic victory.

They've taken 5-105 in the morning session to leave India 144-6 at lunch, chasing a world record 420.

Jack Leach got the breakthrough, having Cheteshwar Pujara caught at slip, off the shoulder of the bat, with a beauty.

India were then going well with Shubman Gill reaching his half-century, alongside captain Virat Kohli.

Then up stepped James Anderson with one of the great overs in modern-day Test history. He bowled Shubman Gill between bat and pad with his second ball, had a review go marginally against him his fourth ball against Ajinkya Rahane, before bowling him next ball.

He then had Rishabh Pant caught at cover in a fantastic spell that saw him pick up three wickets, for six runs, in just five overs.

Dom Bess - who has struggled and bowled a lot of full tosses - then had Washington Sundar caught behind for a duck.

The session ended with Jofra Archer hitting Ravichandran Ashwin on the hand twice, and on the helmet, with England all over the hosts.

Now 95% of you think they will.
