Jonny Bairstow didn't set the world alight in Sri Lanka but he played nicely. I think you'd want his experience, the guy who has played a lot in India in terms of the IPL, Test and one-day cricket.

There's a lot for England to think about. A week ago everything was perfect, a week later everything is not perfect. You need to be careful not to have a knee-jerk reaction.

Joe Root says it was Moeen's decision to return home given the amount of time he would have to spend away in a bubble. England gave him the option and he has taken it up.

I think the Test team should be the preference this year. Up until 2019 the preference was the World Cup, which they won. I think this year it should all be about the Test team.

Speaking to Channel 4, Joe Root has also confirmed the decision to barely bowl Ben Stokes in this Test was purely tactical. He is not injured.

The plan is for Moeen Ali to go home now which I find absolutely staggering. You've just got into the Test team, got all these wickets, smashed a few out of the ground and now England are potentially sending him home. I just don't understand this scientific approach to selection.

They're not being flexible to keep players there who are doing something. I don't understand why a series like India away, which is such a huge series, you'd be chopping and changing so much.

This year for me is about winning the Ashes. There's a T20 World Cup but for English cricket it's about getting those Ashes back.

England have wasted no time in naming their squad for the third Test, which starts next Wednesday.

Aside from Moeen Ali flying home, there are few surprises. Mark Wood and Jonny Bairstow come straight in after arriving in India after their breaks. Jofra Archer and Zak Crawley were out of this Test injured but return.

It now looks a strange decision to have brought him in for one game.

Axar Patel is only the second left-arm spinner to take a five-wicket haul on Test debut against England since Australia's Jack Saunders did so in 1902. The other was Alf Valentine for West Indies in 1950.

As a captain, I would definitely try to get the whole team together tonight. There's not much you can do in a bubble but you can get them in a team room and have a relaxing night.

For the inexperienced players, you'd be trying to make sure they don't lose too much heart. Making sure they don't take on too much baggage and the emotional scars of playing Ashwin and Patel into Ahmedabad.

I think the fact it's a day-night Test match and there are so many unknowns going into next week actually helps England because the conditions will be so alien, for both teams.

England's total runs in this Test - 298 - is the first time they've been bowled out in both innings for a total of under 300 since 1995 when they played West Indies at Edgbaston.

They have played 317 Tests since without a match aggregate under 300.

Player of the match Ravichandran Ashwin, who took 8-96 in the match and scored 106: "This wicket is very different to what we played on in the first game. Those balls that were doing too much weren't actually getting the wickets.

"It's not as easy as it looks to take wickets. It takes a certain amount of patience and a certain mind to do it."

England's spinners didn't bowl well enough in that first innings. You've got to bowl consistently.

With the England spinners it was a little bit too easy but with the India spinners you had to work for your runs, they were putting it in the danger areas over and over again. Not just three or four balls in the over, you've got to put it there six out of six.

England can't just say 'these things happen on these kinds of wickets' because they will come up against India again in the next two Tests on similar kinds of wickets.

It's all about how they improve and learn.

Mark Hodgson: Depending on the pitch of course, but Crawley in for Burns. JB in for Lawrence. I’d then strongly consider Anderson and Woakes in for Broad/Stone. Woakes is a top bowler when it moves around and strengthens the batting line-up.
