How are you going build foundations with a team when you keep changing it? England's issue for some time is we don't have a solid opening partnership. Unfortunately that will always be a problem when comparing us to the very best Test teams in the world.

  2. Ind 7-1published at 7 overs

Rohit Sharma snatches his bottom hand off the bat as Jimmy Anderson hits the willow hard, and he's lucky that the ball goes on the bounce to the lurking fielders.

Jack Gilbert: Do think Gill and Rohit are going to really struggle in England this summer against the swinging new ball.

Slip and a short leg in for Jack Leach as he bowls to Rohit Sharma, who has to send back an overenthusiastic Cheteshwar Pujara as he tries to nab a single.

Pujara does get off the mark, though, and in nice fashion, a whip off his pads picking up two runs.

Right then. Ben Stokes off and Jack Leach on.

  6. Ind 4-1published at 5 overs

James Anderson rattles a delivery just over Cheteshwar Pujara's stumps, who is bating some way out of his crease. Another maiden is added to the tally.

Jonathan France: Yet again bowled out within a day after winning the toss. We'll be in for another hammering if this trend continues into the Ashes in Australia.

  8. Ind 4-1published at 4 overs

    Trail by 201 runs

Ben Stokes follows that up with a maiden of his own.

The problem for England is that, while India might not be going anywhere fast at the minute, they're going to get ample use of a very good pitch on what are the best two days for batting.

This rotation policy has got to be called into question when Chris Woakes for example was in the bubble for so long and played no part.

  10. Ind 4-1published at 3 overs

A very solid maiden is seen off by Cheteshwar Pujara.

Early call, but eight sessions to bat, Rohit could go for the record here...

  12. Ind 4-1published at 2 overs

Ben Stokes gets away with a floaty full toss first up, as Rohit Sharma charitably thumps it straight towards the fielder at short cover.

No getting away with that one, though, Rohit standing tall and punching four away past third slip and away to the boundary.

So, Ben Stokes will share new ball duties with James Anderson.

India need six to avoid the follow-on.

    Just saying.

    Umpire's call it is!

It looked very out, Shubman Gill playing all around this full, straight delivery, and the technology reckons enough of the ball is hitting the stumps to send the India opener on his way.
