This series is an umpire's nightmare with so much turn and bounce but I think the on-field umpires have largely done a tremendous job.

England won the toss and opted to bat, by the way.
I'm sure Jimmy Anderson is thrilled that he's now out there batting.

Dom Bess missed that by quite a long way in the end.
Bess lbw b Axar 3 (Eng 189-9)
Image source, BCCIAs out as out can be.
That's a fourth wicket for the increasingly excellent Axar Patel, who beats Dom Bess' inside edge and pins him smack in front of leg stump.
Ooh, this is out.
Dom Bess is out lbw to Axar Patel but reviews it because, well, why not?
As a fan of people running down the wicket and then missing the ball by a yard, that was a great one of the genre from Dan Lawrence. He's missed that by a mile, largely because he's come out of his crease while Axar Patel was still in his delivery stride.
Also, not sure the number seven is to blame for this kerfuffle England find themselves in.

Being positive is one thing. Being reckless is another. That's flawed thinking.
Lawrence st Pant b Axar 46 (Eng 188-8)
You've all jinxed Dan Lawrence.
Only joking! Axar Patel sees Dan Lawrence skipping out of his crease and tosses the ball a little wider and a little quicker. Lawrence can't get to it and it's the easiest of stumpings for Rishabh Pant to polish off behind the stumps.

You can see Dan Lawrence is good enough at this level and he has the right temperament. That's something England can definitely take away from this tour.

Image source, BCCIRob Meech: Amid the chaos, Dan Lawrence is playing an intelligent and measured innings. He’s keeping it simple - blocking the good deliveries and putting away the bad. I haven’t seen too much of him, but in unfavourable conditions he’s looked very impressive.
Lawrence 46, Bess 3
I mean, Dan Lawrence has just taken the umpire out at the non striker's end.
He advances, slaps a furious drive back down the ground and the poor umpire does well to get himself out of the way, before ending up flat on his back. The ball goes for four and the umpire gets a helping hand back to his feet.
I'm going to offer up the boring, middle-of-the-road view that Ben Foakes is a very, very good keeper-batsman, but Jos Buttler is better right now.
I know, I know. Sorry for being dull.
Nick: Paul Barrow seems to forget Foakes' Test century or the fact he still averages more than anyone other than Joe Root in our line-up. The fact he is a world-class keeper is a bonus!
Shot!
Axar Patel drops short and Dan Lawrence is so quick to rock back and whip it, all wrists, over deep backward square and into the boundary ropes.

Lawrence 36, Bess 3
Dan Lawrence plays out another very good over from Ashwin.

Image source, BCCIPaul Barrow: Ben Foakes' ability to theatrically whip the bails off with the batsman's foot deep in the crease might not actually be enough to sustain a Test career.
Truly, I would have been a useless umpire.
Oh!
Well, the third umpire reckons the ball bounced in front of the boot. I'm... not so sure. But still. Dan Lawrence survives.
(This is out, in my eyes.)
