Summary

  • Group 1: Durham v Essex; Warks v Notts; Worcs v Derbys

  • Group 2: Leics v Middlesex; Surrey v Glos

  • Group 3: Lancs v Yorks; Sussex v Northants

  1. Better news from New Roadpublished at 14:24 British Summer Time 28 May 2021

Worcestershire 421, Derbyshire yet to bat.

A better weather outlook from Worcester, where the light rain shower has passed and they are now ready to restart after lunch.

Play will recommence at 2:25. And apparently only four overs have been lost. Not quite sure how they've worked that, but it has the words 'late finish' written all over it.

Derbyshire's opening pair will be doing their stretches.

  2. 150 runs

150 for Hashim Amlapublished at 14:23 British Summer Time 28 May 2021

    Surrey 396-7 v Gloucestershire

Hashim Amla is just a proper class act, isn't he?

The 38-year-old has just reached 150 as Surrey continue to build and build at The Oval, their score now 396-7.

Rikki Clarke is keeping him company on 18 not out.

  3. Two quick wickets at Durhampublished at 14:21 British Summer Time 28 May 2021

    Durham 99 v Essex 182 v 61-5

Just as Essex were beginning to build at Chester-le-Street, two more quick wickets have changed the complexion of the contest once more.

Paul Walter (22) and then Michael Pepper (16) have both been dismissed - remarkably caught behind rather than bowled or lbw!

Essex's lead is 144, which could still be fairly substantial in a low-scoring game, but the door is ajar for Durham.

  4. 100 runs

100 partnershippublished at 14:15 British Summer Time 28 May 2021

    Yorkshire 159 v Lancashire 178-1

Lancashire's second wicket partners Keaton Jennings (75) and Luke Wells (37) reach their first century stand together.

It's hard going and tough watching, but for those Lancashire supporters who can't, or would rather not have to watch at all, it's music to their ears.

And the BBC Radio commentary team of Scott Read, Kevin Howells and Jonathan Doidge are certainly very entertaining to listen to.

71 overs gone. Barely two and half runs an over. Dom Bess keeping it tight. And Yorkshire now just nine away from the new ball. It may not necessarily get any quicker any time soon!

  5. Lancashire leadpublished at 13:55 British Summer Time 28 May 2021

    Yorkshire 159 v Lancashire 160-1

Lancashire lead Yorkshire by one run... with nine wickets remaining!

Keaton Jennings is on 61 from 200 balls (you do the maths!) and Luke Wells is on 35, which has taken three hours, and at an even slower strike rate than Jennings too.

This obdurate pair now look bedded in.

  6. rain stops play

Rain stops play at New Roadpublished at 13:49 British Summer Time 28 May 2021

Worcestershire 421. Derbyshire yet to bat.

Back under way this afternoon in all games, except at New Road, where there is some rain around.

After a bright, sunny start this morning, Worcestershire has turned a little unpleasant.

Derbyshire are holed up in the Graeme Hick Pavilion, waiting to start their reply to the Pears' 421.

  7. 'The crowd remain absorbed'published at 13:28 British Summer Time 28 May 2021

    Durham 99 v Essex 182 & 15-3

    Nick Gledhill
    BBC Radio Essex

And the wickets keep falling here at the Riverside.

This match is a story of two strong seam attacks exploiting a pitch offering movement and low bounce. Durham, conceding a first-innings lead of 83, did exactly what they had to do by taking three quick Essex wickets before lunch.

If Durham can bowl Essex out again cheaply they could yet turn this game on its head as Essex did yesterday.

The crowd remain absorbed by the action but there may not be much to see tomorrow, let alone Sunday.

  8. 'Helm & Bamber were ruthless'published at 13:22 British Summer Time 28 May 2021

    Leicestershire 21-3 v Middlesex 295

    Kevin Hand
    BBC Radio London

Middlesex powered into an ascendancy in the fourth session of the match as they nudged their way to a respectable first-innings total before blasting out three wickets in an inspired spell from Tom Helm and Ethan Bamber.

John Simpson resumed on 73 this morning but was left stranded just shy of his first century of the season as Leicestershire maintained a tight line and length that restricted Middlesex to below 300 even beyond the 110th over of the innings when the bonus points come to an end.

The pitch offered swing, seam and spin from the first morning but has quickened on the second day and Helm and Bamber were ruthless exponents of that with the continued movement of day one.

The hosts are now left to rebuild but first they must resist and try to see off the new ball pair, who will still be fresh into their opening spells after the interval.

  9. 'Small lead could be significant'published at 13:17 British Summer Time 28 May 2021

    Sussex 175 v Northants 195-8

    Adrian Harms
    BBC Radio Sussex

Northamptonshire with their noses in front at Hove, reaching lunch with a lead of 20, which may be significant in a low-scoring game.

Saif Zaib, who scored 100 in the reverse fixture earlier in the season, is again in the runs reaching the break 62 not out having batted for almost three hours.

George Garton has taken three wickets for Sussex, although 19-year-old seamer Henry Crocombe has been the pick of the bowling attack.

  10. Lunch at Hovepublished at 13:10 British Summer Time 28 May 2021

    Sussex 175 v Northants 195-8

Saif Zaib has played a super hand this morning, his unbeaten 62 lifting Northants beyond Sussex's 175.

No other batsman has made more than 28.

  11. Lunch at The Ovalpublished at 13:09 British Summer Time 28 May 2021

    Surrey 363-7 v Gloucestershire

While the scoring has been kept under some control, it's been Surrey's morning at The Oval as they've moved onto 363-7.

Hashim Amla is unbeaten on 136, while Rikki Clarke is two not out.

  12. Lunch at Leicesterpublished at 13:07 British Summer Time 28 May 2021

    Leicestershire 21-3 v Middlesex 295

That's been a funny old morning session, with just 56 runs added in two hours but six wickets falling.

Tom Helm and Ethan Bamber have struck three times between them to limit Leicestershire's reply, after they had earlier dismissed Middlesex for 295.

  13. Lunch at Old Traffordpublished at 13:06 British Summer Time 28 May 2021

    Yorkshire 159 v Lancashire 150-1

No morning breakthrough for Yorkshire in the Roses Match.

Keaton Jennings (55) and Luke Wells (31) have amassed just 55 in the morning session - but, perhaps more importantly, no wickets have been lost and they are now within nine of the Tykes' first-innings total.

    Looking ominous for the visitors.

  14. Essex three down & lunchpublished at 13:03 British Summer Time 28 May 2021

    Durham 99 v Essex 182 & 15-3

Durham are on the charge here!

Alastair Cook, bowled by Chris Rushworth, and Tom Westley, trapped lbw by Ben Raine, fall in successive overs to leave Essex 15-3.

That means we've had a total of 14 lbws in the match.

Twenty-one of 23 wickets to fall have been either lbw or bowled.

And the last 18 wickets have now gone down for only 117 runs.

    That's also lunch at Chester-le-Street.

  15. Lunch at Edgbastonpublished at 13:03 British Summer Time 28 May 2021

    Warwickshire 341 v Notts 6-0

Nottinghamshire safely negotiate the first three overs of their reply from Oliver Hannon-Dalby and Liam Norwell.

One or two lifters to deal with, but Ben Slater and recalled England batsman Haseeb Hameed head off for a light nibble.

  16. wicket

Worcestershire all out at New Roadpublished at 12:50 British Summer Time 28 May 2021

    Worcestershire 421 v Derbyshire

Ed Barnard misses out on a century at New Road.

He is last man out for 90 after a 45-run last-wicket stand with Dillon Pennington, who was not out on 24.

A second wicket of the innings for Matt 'The Centurion Destroyer' Critchley, who also bagged Jack Haynes on Thursday for 97.

    Lunch is now being taken.

  17. Essex lose Browne earlypublished at 12:50 British Summer Time 28 May 2021

    Durham 99 v Essex 182 & 13-1

An early blow for Essex, who have lost opener Nick Browne lbw to Ben Raine.

If Durham are to have any chance here they're going to have to run through the Essex order fairly sharpish, having surrendered an 83-run first innings deficit - and knowing how good a bowling attack they'll be facing.

  18. 50 runs

50 for Keaton Jenningspublished at 12:48 British Summer Time 28 May 2021

    Yorkshire 159 v Lancashire 146-1

It's taken him almost four hours - but Keaton Jennings has now reached his half century.

A nice land mark for Jennings too. It's his 50th in first-class cricket - and a 15th for Lancashire for the South Africa-born England batsman.

Luke Wells has moved on to 29 as the Red Rose move ever closer to matching Yorkshire's first-innings score of 159.

  19. Abbott goespublished at 12:44 British Summer Time 28 May 2021

    Surrey 347-7 v Gloucestershire

Having dismissed Jamie Overton with the very first ball of the day, Gloucestershire have had to wait until 20 minutes before lunch for another.

Sean Abbott's 40-run stay is ended by spinner Tom Smith, who traps him in front, bringing Rikki Clarke to the crease.

Hashim Amla continues to build and build, now unbeaten on 123.

  20. Two early wickets at Leicesterpublished at 12:41 British Summer Time 28 May 2021

    Leicestershire 13-2 v Middlesex 295

This is not the start Leicestershire would've wanted to make in reply to Middlesex's 295.

Hassan Azad and Marcus Harris are both dismissed inside the opening six overs to leave the hosts 13-2, with Sam Evans and Colin Ackermann now at the crease.
