    Ben GeddesImage source, Rex Features

Ben Geddes - or Benedict Brodie Albert Geddes to give him his magnificent full name - is playing his first Championship game for Surrey, and he's only doing that because Will Jacks was called away by England.

It would be some sort of modest cricketing fairytale if the 19-year-old could see the day out and earn Surrey a draw.

Partner Hashim Amla, who is double his age, watches from the other end as Geddes takes a single in Ian Holland's latest over.

WICKET Robson lbw Taylor 0published at 15:12 British Summer Time 7 July 2021

Middx 8-2 need 420 to beat Glos

Matt Taylor has sent down 15 balls without conceding a run.

Then he gets one to swing back into Sam Robson and pin him lbw.

Robson stands there disbelievingly and he has a point - replay suggests that probably pitched outside leg stump.

But he ended up playing French cricket which didn't look good for the umpire.

Either way, The Shire have two of the 10 they need.

  3. wicket

WICKET Smith c Holland b Organ 14published at 15:10 British Summer Time 7 July 2021

    Hampshire 488 v Surrey 72 & 60-5

    Felix OrganImage source, Rex Features

Another Surrey wicket gone as Felix Organ turns the ball out the footmarks, it takes the inside edge and loops to Ian Holland, one of three close-in fielders on the leg-side. Smith and Hashim Amla put on 30 in 16 overs.

Next man in is 19-year-old Ben Geddes. What must he be thinking?

  4. Postpublished at 15:08 British Summer Time 7 July 2021

    Hampshire 488 v Surrey 72 & 60-4

Ian Holland is now bowling for Hampshire and thick edge brings Hashim Amla two runs at the end of his latest over. Amla has 18 from 149 balls.

  5. Tea at Old Traffordpublished at 15:05 British Summer Time 7 July 2021

    Lancashire 259-9 dec v Kent 74 & 88-4

A single each for Jack Leaning and Tawanda Muyeye in the final over before drizzle sends the teams off for tea - and there will be 44 more for Kent to survive in the final session, weather permitting.

Leaning is 25 not out and Muyeye has two and Kent's deficit is now down to 97.

  6. wicket

WICKET De Caires c Phillips b Worrall 4published at 15:03 British Summer Time 7 July 2021

Middx 4-1 need 420 to beat Glos

A nice early settler for the Glosters.

Dan Worrall sends down a full away-swinger that Josh de Caires drives at and nicks to slip.

    4 & 5 on debut for Michael Atherton’s son.

  7. SUSSEX DECLAREpublished at 14:59 British Summer Time 7 July 2021

    Sussex 226 & 263-6d v Glam 215

The game is afoot at Hove.

Sussex captain Ben Brown reached his hundred and then immediately declared.

It’s left Glamorgan 275 to win in 51 overs at 5.4 per over.

  8. Postpublished at 14:58 British Summer Time 7 July 2021

    Somerset drew with Leicestershire

The draw moves Somerset to 134 points heading into their final Group match at The Oval.

If Gloucestershire beat Middlesex they will close to within five points.

If Hampshire win they will be only three points behind.

And Hampshire go to Cheltenham on Sunday, which is good news for Somerset.

Somerset, effectively, would have to lose to Surrey and Gloucestershire and Hampshire draw to be denied a place in Division One in September.

Leicestershire have improved to 107 so for the moment occupy fourth and will stay there if Surrey lose.

  9. Postpublished at 14:53 British Summer Time 7 July 2021

    Hampshire 488 v Surrey 72 & 54-4

With Somerset drawing their game against Leicestershire, the onus is on Hampshire to force a victory against Surrey.

A win would earn them 23 points and put them only three behind Somerset ahead of next week's final set of matches in the Championship's first phase.

The latest over from Keith Barker to Hashim Amla is a maiden. The left-arm paceman has 2-2 from 16 overs - 14 of them maidens.

WICKET Kuhn c Wells b Hartley 21published at 14:45 British Summer Time 7 July 2021

    Lancashire 259-9 dec v Kent 74 & 71-4

Heino Kuhn deposited Tom Hartley straight for six at Old Trafford, but spinner has his man in his next over.

Unable to rein himself in, Kuhn attempts a flashing drive and Luke Wells takes a sharp chance at first slip.

Jack Leaning is 10 not out and has been joined by Tawanda Muyeye, who joined this game on Tuesday as a replacement for Zak Crawley.

    Somerset 461-9d v Leics 475-7

The rain has proved too much for any further play at Taunton and Leicestershire have denied Somerset.

It would have been a home win on most coupons - especially after Somerset’s commanding total.

But Leicestershire grafted away and then found the big partnership they needed - a tremendous effort between Harry Swindells and Ed Barnes.

Both will feel a little annoyed to not have the chance for further milestones.

The Foxes were also only 15 shy of their record total against Somerset.

  12. Postpublished at 14:43 British Summer Time 7 July 2021

    Hampshire 488 v Surrey 72 & 54-4

Hashim Amla sweeps Felix Organ but there's a big appeal for lbw as he tries to repeat the stroke and fails to make contact. Fortunately for Surrey, the umpire says 'not out'. Amla is now 16 not out and Jamie Smith has 10.

  13. Gloucestershire all outpublished at 14:39 British Summer Time 7 July 2021

    Glos 248 & 272 v Middx 101

Oli Price eventually out for 33 with his brother Tom left unbeaten on 35.

Exactly what the Glosters needed, a solid innings to take the lead into the fanciful.

    Middlesex require 420 to win.

57 overs left on day three.

  14. Postpublished at 14:37 British Summer Time 7 July 2021

    Lancashire 259-9 dec v Kent 74 & 59-3

Danny Lamb falls to the ground in his follow through as he sends down a short-wide delivery which Jack Leaning carves away square for four. Kent now 126 away from avoiding an innings defeat.

    Hashim AmlaImage source, Rex Features

An authentic attacking stroke as Jamie Smith despatches a half-volley from Felix Organ for four - and from the 126th ball he has faced, Hashim Amla collects his first boundary as Organ sends down a full toss. Amla now into double figures.

  16. Postpublished at 14:28 British Summer Time 7 July 2021

    Hampshire 488 v Surrey 72 & 40-4

Felix Organ is finding some turn from the footmarks. He has bowled four overs, all of them maidens. There have been 33 maidens in the 48 sent down so far in the innings.

  17. Postpublished at 14:26 British Summer Time 7 July 2021

    Warwickshire 237 v Durham 253-7

There will be an inspection at 15:30 BST at Edgbaston following rain which has prevented any play since lunch. David Bedingham is 92 not out for Durham.

  18. Postpublished at 14:23 British Summer Time 7 July 2021

    Lancashire 259-9 dec v Kent 74 & 48-3

Heino Kuhn avoids a pair with a meaty square cut for four off Danny Lamb. He also picks up three from the following delivery but Kent are still 137 in arrears.

  20. Postpublished at 14:16 British Summer Time 7 July 2021

    Hampshire 488 & Surrey 72 & 36-4

Hashim Amla, recently struck a painful blow on the hand by Brad Wheal, survives another delivery which leaps from a good length. Two singles from Wheal's latest over - Amla has five and Jamie Smith is four not out.
