Well, what a wonderful day of county cricket that was.

There was joy for Somerset who sealed progression to Division One and another chance at ending that long wait for a County Championship title, as Jack Leach took a five-fer against Surrey.

We saw a 72-year-old record smashed as Glamorgan pair Kiran Carlson and Chris Cooke obliterated the previous fifth-wicket milestone of 264 with a partnership of 307 - and counting - against Northants.

There was another five-fer for Joey Evison, his first, as Nottinghamshire all but sealed their progression to Division One, almost certainly alongside Warwickshire who toiled with the ball at Worcester but know a draw will be enough.

We had drama at Emerald Headingley where an injury to Yorkshire's Dom Leech, who collided with the concrete foundations of a stand, led to the abandonment of the day's play in the Roses match which will now finish in a draw given Lancashire are still in their first innings.

Yorkshire, Lancashire and Somerset are all assured of Division One berths with Notts and Warwickshire virtually guaranteed to join them.

One spot remains - join us tomorrow to see if Hampshire can press home their advantage at Cheltenham or whether Gloucestershire can hold out for a draw to take that final top-flight spot from Group Two.

    Notts 328 & 125-5, Durham 165

Nottinghamshire close with a 288-run lead over Durham - but only after suffering a disappointment in the penultimate over when Haseeb Hameed was out for 58.

He's undone by a sharply turning delivery from Scott Borthwick which trims his off bail.

Man of the day Joey Evison, who earlier took his 'five-fer', is on 4 and Notts skipper Steven Mullaney is yet get off the mark.

The former Lancashire player, who was called up to the squad for the second Test against New Zealand in June, has moved on to 57.

  5. Close of play at Canterburypublished at 19:09 British Summer Time 13 July 2021

    Kent 165 v Sussex 181 & 277-3

A day to remember at Canterbury for three Sussex youngsters.

Jamie Atkins completed a five-fer as Kent's innings was wrapped up for 165.

Then, Ali Orr (119) and Tom Haines (94) out-scored their side's entire first-innings total with an opening stand of 209.

  6. 50 runs

50 for Steve Eskinazi - and close of playpublished at 19:05 British Summer Time 13 July 2021

    Middlesex 324 & 176-7

Steve Eskinazi reaches his third fifty of the season in the day's final over at Merchant Taylor's School.

But surely his first on one leg.

Batting with a runner, after it looked like he would be ruled out for the rest of this game with a thigh injury, he ended the day on 53.

Nathan Sowter is on 10 - and Middlesex now lead Leicestershire by 272 runs.

  7. wicket

Haines lbw Quinn 94published at 18:59 British Summer Time 13 July 2021

    Kent 165 v Sussex 181 & 259-3

Ah, such a shame for Sussex opener Tom Haines who was so close to a century but falls six runs shy, trapped lbw by Matthew Quinn.

Sussex still firmly in control, though, 275 runs ahead and you expect they will put Kent in to bat early on Wednesday in a bid to bowl them out and pick up the win.

  8. Close of play at Cheltenhampublished at 18:52 British Summer Time 13 July 2021

    Glos 229 & 107-3 v Hants 486-7 dec

That may yet prove a very important last hour for Gloucestershire.

They are still 150 behind and battling to save their season, with Division One cricket at stake.

But Tom Lace (25no) and Glenn Phillips (16no) both dug in after three top-order wickets fell.

Hampshire will still fancy their chances of progression on the final day - they need seven wickets, while Gloucestershire's only real hope is to bat out a draw. Should be a rollercoaster.

  9. Close of play in Cardiffpublished at 18:49 British Summer Time 13 July 2021

    Glamorgan 462-4 v Northants 215

Kiran Carlson and Chris Cooke have absolutely smashed Glamorgan's record fifth-wicket partnership at Sophia Gardens.

The previous mark stood at 264 for 72 years but they have accumulated a whopping 307 against Northants.

Those Northants bowlers and fielders will sleep well tonight. Or maybe their dreams will be haunted by Carlson (170no) and Cooke (133no).

  10. 300 runs

300 partnership for Glamorganpublished at 18:39 British Summer Time 13 July 2021

    Glamorgan 460-4 v Northants 215

Running out of superlatives for Kiran Carlson and Chris Cooke.

Northants bowlers are running out of ideas to prise them from the crease.

  11. wicket

Harris lbw Barnes 26published at 18:38 British Summer Time 13 July 2021

    Middlesex 324 & 159-7, Leicestershire 228

Leicestershire finally strike at Merchant Taylors' to end the 77-run stand between the limping Steve Eskinazi and James Harris, who is out for 26.

Nathan Sowter comes out to join Eskinazi (and his runner Max Holden).

The pair have now been out there for over three hours, during which time Eskinazi has heroically moved to win two of a fifty.

  12. Postpublished at 18:38 British Summer Time 13 July 2021

    Glos 229 & 101-3 v Hants 486-7 dec

Glenn Phillips has undoubtedly been Gloucestershire's man of the match in their winner-take all Group Two match with Hampshire.

He top-scored with 47 in their first innings, then took two wickets and catches in Hampshire's reply.

And now he's digging in, on 14no, alongside Tom Lace (21no) as the hosts attempt to salvage something from a pretty disastrous day.

They trail by 156, with seven wickets left and Hampshire's second innings to come.

  13. Close of play at New Roadpublished at 18:33 British Summer Time 13 July 2021

    Bears 395, Pears 415-8

Ed Barnard ends the day 98 not out - and Worcestershire have a 20-run overnight lead against Warwickshire on day three in the Midlands derby at New Road.

  14. Wicket and close of play at the Kia Ovalpublished at 18:31 British Summer Time 13 July 2021

    Surrey 239-8 v Somerset 429

Surrey lost a wicket in the final over before lunch, the first over after lunch - and now, the final over of the day at the Kia Oval.

Jamie Overton, whose participation was in doubt due to a calf injury, ended up padding up but he's bowled by Roelof van der Merwe.

A very satisfying day for Somerset who sealed progression to Division One and very much have the upper hand in this one after Jack Leach took 5-42 and Ven Der Merwe 3-54.

    Kent 165 v Sussex 181 & 230-2

Further reward for the Kent bowlers who have toiled for much of the day, struggling to break up that 209-run opening stand for Sussex.

Harrison Ward is caught by stand-in skipper Heino Kuhn off Matthew Quinn as a patched-up Kent side continue to battle away.

  16. 100 runs

100 up for Nottspublished at 18:30 British Summer Time 13 July 2021

    Notts 328 & 100-2, Durham 165

  17. 250 runs

400 up for Worcestershirepublished at 18:27 British Summer Time 13 July 2021

    Bears 395, Pears 413-8

Worcestershire are past Warwickshire's first-innings score of 395 at New Road, past 40 and are now even building a lead.

And Ed Barnard is within four runs of a ton on 96, with Adam Finch on 29.

    Great effort from the Pears.

Two overs left in the day - and the Bears now have the option of taking a third new ball.

  18. That's a recordpublished at 18:26 British Summer Time 13 July 2021

    Glamorgan 430-4 v Northants 215

They're not stopping, Kiran Carlson and Chris Cooke.

And their 275-run partnership has beaten a Glamorgan club record dating back 72 years.

  19. 150 runs

150 for Kiran Carlsonpublished at 18:24 British Summer Time 13 July 2021

    Glamorgan 421-4 v Northants 215

Kiran Carlson, at 23, of course, has a few years on 35-year-old Chris Cooke.

He has a few runs on his skipper as well - that's 150 now. Off only 210 deliveries which is pretty rapid going in the first-class game.

  20. 100 runs

100 for Chris Cookepublished at 18:19 British Summer Time 13 July 2021

    Glamorgan 412-4 v Northants 215

Glamorgan captain Chris Cooke follows Kiran Carlson into the century enclosure in Cardiff.

The hosts are going to post the biggest score this week if they keep going because Somerset's 429 is within close reach.

Like Carlson, it's his third century of the season - and, also like Carlson, it's Cooke's seventh first-class ton in total. Trying to outdo each other?
