  2. What's this Somerset batting made of?published at 13:35 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    Warwickshire v Somerset 41-3 (Target 273)

Somerset may have made 389 in the first innings in this match, but their batting in this second stage of the Championship has been flimsy at best.

They have slipped here from 31-0 to 35-3, and suddenly the target of 273 looks miles off. While they face the daunting prospect of surviving 61 overs.

Forgetting the scores, the six innings before this week lasted 38.5, 66.3, 42, 51.5, 38,2 and 72.1 overs respectively.

    All over at Trent Bridge.

Liam Patterson-White clips Dom Bess away for a one-bounce four into the short boundary on the legside as they reach their target of 174.

Nottinghamshire beat Yorkshire by five wickets and move up to second in Division One as it stands.

Ben Slater finishes not out on 79 off 132 balls and Notts record their seventh win in the Championship this season - not bad in the same season they ended a near three-year wait for a win in this format.

Will that win though be enough to send them to Lord's next week for the Bob Willis Trophy final?

    Warwickshire v Somerset 35-3 (Target 273)

This feels like a big one. Three down now and two wickets in two overs.

Azhar Ali is induced into an indiscriminate prod outside off-stump and he can only guide it straight into the hands of Sam Hain at second slip.

Warwickshire are right into this now. They can smell blood!

A 27th four from Ollie Pope brings up his double century at The Oval.

Dan Douthwaite with the short and wide ball that he tucks into.

It's come off 263 balls in just more than four-and-a-half hours.

Well, still not done and dusted at Trent Bridge.

Tom Moores clips one straight to the hands of Will Fraine at midwicket to fall for seven off Ben Coad.

    Still 11 needed.

    An early breakthrough after lunch!

Ben Green can't believe what he has done as he is caught down the legside by Michael Burgess off Tim Bresnan.

Chris Woakes has challenged them at the other end, yet Bresnan gets a wicket with a legside strangle.

  8. Ali up and runningpublished at 13:22 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    Warwickshire v Somerset 35-1 (Target 273)

Azhar Ali went off the field this morning after he went down and there were fears that he might not be able to bat.

But the Pakistan man has come out to bat at number three and he gets up and running with a nice clip for three.

He's tested by Chris Woakes though, as the England man delivers another maiden.

    Nottinghamshire (296 & 163-4) need 11 more runs to beat Yorkshire (73 & 396)

Lovely straight lofted drive from Tom Moores off Ben Coad gets four runs.

Notts need 11 more to win as that shot is greeted by hearty cheers and screams from a group of schoolchildren on a class trip at Trent Bridge.

A four through point and a single from Ben Slater takes the equation down to 20 to win for Nottinghamshire after the first over of the session.

A few more shots like that and the Notts players can head down The Stratford Haven round the corner for a few celebration refreshments....

In case you missed all the drama on Thursday evening - Lancashire gave themselves a chance of being crowned champions when they beat Hampshire by one wicket at Aigburth.

Now they have to sit and wait for events to conclude at Edgbaston.

Here's what their coach Glen Chapple had to say after the match in Liverpool yesterday.

It's still early in the day yet - but there's nothing like being prepared.

It has been confirmed that the County Championship trophy is here at Edgbaston, should Warwickshire do what is expected of them, beat Somerset - and win a first title in nine years.

Meanwhile, in Manchester, the media have been invited along to Emirates Old Trafford from 15:30 BST this afternoon to watch the finale of the Warwickshire-Somerset game on live stream in the company of the Lancashire players, coaches and members.

"If results go the Red Rose way, the trophy presentation etc will follow…"

There's a long way to go yet though.

  19. Can Somerset be party poopers?published at 12:44 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    Somerset (389 & 32-1) need 241 more runs to beat Warwickshire (367 & 294-3 dec)

    Anthony Gibson
    BBC Radio Somerset at Edgbaston

Lewis Gregory told me last evening that Somerset would chase a fourth innings target, as long as it was "realistic".

Well, I reckon that 273 in 79 overs most certainly qualifies for that epithet, on a placid pitch under promised sunny skies.

Will Rhodes' task in setting that target was made easier by some ragged Somerset bowling to a field of nine on the boundary, Rob Yates helping himself to probably the easiest century he'll ever score.

Somerset lost Tom Lammonby, cutting against the spin, in the 45 minutes before lunch, but will still fancy their chances of finishing what's been a disappointing season on a high, spoiling Warwickshire's party in the process.
