  2. Headingley was a breeze...published at 15:04 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    Warwickshire v Somerset 90-7 (Target 273)

Here comes Jack Leach out at number nine for Somerset.

Forget his one not out v Australia while Ben Stokes went ballistic. He has more than 40 overs to negotiate to prevent Warwickshire from winning the title.

The engraver can start warming his hands up!!

High-class fast bowling from Chris Woakes sees off fellow England player Craig Overton.

Great length, away swing and too good for Overton, as his off pole is sent flying. A magic delivery from the Aston Villa fan.

  5. Warwickshire need 4 wickets to win the titlepublished at 14:51 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    Warwickshire v Somerset 85-6 (Target 273)

The players sense it, the crowd senses it. It feels like Warwickshire are on the brink here.

Lancashire's hopes rest with either the rain, or the (alternative) hero of Headingley, Jack Leach!

    Warwickshire v Somerset 85-6 (Target 273)

    Bowled him!!

Cornwall's finest, Liam Norwell, gets in on the act. Full, straight and too good for Steven Davies and the middle stump is knocked back.

    Super bowling!

Four wickets to go, 45.3 overs left to do it.

  8. Career best score for Ollie Popepublished at 14:44 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    Surrey 647-3 v Glamorgan 672-6 dec

Ollie Pope's 34th four of his innings takes him to 255 and brings up his highest first-class score.

It surpasses his previous best of 251 which came in March 2019 against the MCC in the Champion County fixture in Dubai.

The seats at Edgbaston are starting to fill up, the wickets are falling and the Bears roars (both on and off the pitch) are getting louder.

At 76-5, with 197 runs needed, and only five wickets in hand, this is now a lot more about whether Somerset are saving this game than winning it.

Can they hold out for Lancashire? History suggests not.

But, although Somerset have never won the title themselves, they do have a habit of being there when the trophy is lifted.

This would be the third year in a row, in fact.

They were the opposition when Essex won the last Championship title at Taunton in 2019 - and again as runners-up to Essex for the Bob Willis Trophy final last year.

It was even at Taunton against Somerset when Lancashire last won the title in 2011.

  11. 250 runs

250 for Ollie Popepublished at 14:35 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    Surrey 641-3 v Glamorgan 672-6 dec

On any other day, we'd rightly be giving this Ollie Pope innings top billing...

But there's a bigger picture and this is the smoothest of roads that anyone will ever bat on at The Oval.

Take nothing away from Pope though - 250 is a mammoth score to get and he gets there off 319 balls.

    It's included 33 fours and a six.

    Warwickshire v Somerset 73-5 (Target 273)

    EdgbastonImage source, PA Media

We're used to the sights and sounds of Edgbaston for Test matches and T20 Blast Finals Day, but Championship cricket is the bread and butter.

The crowd may be smaller in number than for those occasions, but the atmosphere is building in Birmingham with Warwickshire only five wickets away.

  14. wicket

    Warwickshire v Somerset 73-4 (Target 273)

    Halfway to glory for Warwickshire!

The combination of Craig Miles and Rob Yates are in business again. Miles gets a thick edge from Lewis Goldsworthy and Yates snaffles another at third slip. He had lived dangerously and the Somerset man has run out of lives.

A century this morning and two catches this afternoon, Yates is having a great day.

  15. Big appeal!published at 14:20 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    Warwickshire v Somerset 71-4 (Target 273)

The Warwickshire slip cordon and wicketkeeper are convinced they've got another as Liam Norwell jags one into Steven Davies.

But the umpire does not raise his finger. Possibly thigh pad rather than bat.

  16. When does the chase become impossible?published at 14:14 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    Warwickshire v Somerset 71-4 (Target 273)

Somerset need 202 runs off 52 overs if they are to pull off an unlikely run chase. The required rate is closing in on four runs per over.

At what point does unlikely become impossible?

  17. wicket

WICKET Amla c Hogan b Carlson 163published at 14:03 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    Surrey 609-3 v Glamorgan 672-6 dec

Yes, wickets do fall at The Oval is seems....

After a third-wicket partnership of 362 between Hashim Amla and Ollie Pope, Amla finally departs for 163.

Michael Hogan takes the catch down at long-on off Kiran Carlson and that ends the South African's 306-ball effort in just 13 minutes shy of seven hours at the crease.

  18. Almost anotherpublished at 14:01 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    Warwickshire v Somerset 62-4 (Target 273)

Lewis Goldsworthy is a lucky man as his Chinese cut off Tim Bresnan misses the stumps and races down to fine leg for four.

He's 25 not out from 28 deliveries, but he is living dangerously.

  19. wicket

WICKET Abell c Yates b Miles 0published at 13:54 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    Warwickshire v Somerset 56-4 (Target 273)

    MilesImage source, Getty Images

Warwickshire's charge towards the title is beginning to pick up speed!

Tom Abell's difficult spell at the crease is brought to an end. After 20 dot balls, he tries to get off the mark but only manages to steer a lifter from Craig Miles to Rob Yates at gully.

Abell goes for a duck and the Bears only need six more wickets.

  20. Bres doing it for Yorkshirepublished at 13:51 British Summer Time 24 September 2021

    Warwickshire v Somerset 55-3 (Target 273)

Tim Bresnan continues as he tries to lead Warwickshire to the title. With a wicket and a brilliant catch, he's certainly doing his bit and it's 1-10 off eight tidy overs.

Of course, Bresnan won the title with his native Yorkshire in 2014 and 2015. Now 36, Bresnan will have all of the White Rose county supporting him to stop deadly rivals Lancashire from winning the title!
