Dan Lawrence is the new batter for England.

He got a duck in his one knock at Lord's so is still looking for first Test run in England.

Pope was leaning away from the shot to create some room, which suggests the ball was actually a bit too close to him to play that shot. It was short enough to cut but he maybe misread the line.

It felt like it was there for the shot. Pope goes just as he started to look fluent.

    Pope c Blundell b Patel 19 (Eng 127-4)

    Ugh.

Pope was looking to be busy, maybe too busy? He uses his feet to come down the pitch to his second delivery, before looking to cut the third away, similar to the first ball.

He perhaps backs off to leg a little bit too much, meaning he's a bit off balance, and stretching for the cut and feathers one behind to wicketkeeper Tom Blundell.

He didn't even bother to look at the umpire, and he's fuming with himself as he walks off.

Ollie Pope will be busy against the spinner but he's got to make sure his eyes don't light up too much.

  6. Eng 127-3published at 49.1 overs

The spin of Ajaz Patel is coming back on, and Ollie Pope rocks onto the back foot and back cuts for four first ball.

Pope did struggle against the spin of Pakistan's Yasir Shah last summer and in India over the winter so this is an important little period for him.

  7. Robinson takes 'short break' from cricketpublished at 15:11 British Summer Time 10 June 2021

Ollie Robinson, who is not playing in this Test because of his suspension, will not play for Sussex this week either.

The seamer will miss their first two T20 Blast games on Friday and Saturday as he takes a "short break" from cricket.

On Sunday Robinson was suspended from international cricket pending an investigation after racist and sexist tweets he posted in 2012 and 2013 were shared online.

He will miss Sussex's matches against Gloucestershire and Hampshire.

There is currently no indication when he will play again.

New Zealand, and Trent Boult in particular, are still probing.

The left-armer goes over the wicket to Ollie Pope, and gets a little bit of in-movement, which results in Pope just about jabbing his bat down in time to edge down to fine leg.

    He's up to 15.

Daryl Mitchell is a good cricketer, but I must admit I'm a little bit disappointed I don't get to watch Colin de Grandhomme's excellent mullet again.

Mitchell has been tidy for New Zealand, without being very threatening.

This is really good cricket. New Zealand are still really probing.

But Burns and Pope are hanging in there well.

  12. Eng 120-3published at 47 overs

    Burns 57, Pope 14

    That's a shot.

Trent Boult bangs one in shorter, but Rory Burns is a more than competent puller as he crunches to the boundary.

England will be hoping these two are still together at tea in just under 40 minutes time.

    The stuff of nightmares, really...

  14. Eng 115-3published at 46 overs

Ollie Pope picks up a couple more with a clip through mid-wicket. He's played some really nice strokes so far, but as somehow not found the boundary yet.

Jack Leach and Sam Billings are off to the nets for a bat. I wonder when we'll see Leach this summer.

My favourite Anderson memory is my wife drunkenly shouting “Jimmy” as he got into a lift with Andy Caddick at a hotel during the World Cup in South Africa. He looked terrified and bemused but was very polite and gave her a wave as the lift doors slid shut!

Rory Burns and Ollie Pope seem to have steadied the ship for England, at least for now.

They've put on 28 so far in just over 11 overs.

My standout memory of Jimmy Anderson was in Klute nightclub in Durham. Must be early to mid 2000s and most of the team was in there. A very excited female student brought over an England shirt for him to sign. And when she got back to her table was mortified to realise he had signed it Pamela Anderson. Hope she kept it, though - quite the unique momento now!

It has been watchful stuff from Rory Burns, that fifty came up off 141 balls and contained five fours.

He's now scored exactly 1,500 Test runs at an average of 34.09.

He needs to keep on going here, and notch up his second century of the summer.

    Well played, Rory Burns!

He stands tall and pierces the gap in the covers to move to his second half-century of the series.

He started it under pressure. He's quickly consolidated his place again.
