It is pretty even. England took the first session, New Zealand took the second and I think the third session was pretty even.

It is poised and England could go on tomorrow.

I still think Zak Crawley will have a long Test career.

It might be that he has time out of the team and they need to drop him and someone like Dawid Malan comes back in, but he will have a long Test career, I'm pretty sure.

He'll go away and learn. I'm not saying England are at that moment with him yet.

Test match cricket is tough and hard, and it's an environment where you don't get long. Especially at number three, when you're getting caught at third slip like Zak Crawley is.

He's now got a day, a day and half to go back to his room and can he find the simplicity to just go out there in the second innings and play?

He looked like the perfect player for Australia, but now he's had some failures over the winter and this summer. He'll know the spotlight and the media are talking and writing about him. Can he put that to one side and put it out of his head? Can he just play the ball?

More from Burns to Sky Sports: "Becoming a father does give you some perspective and I'm very grateful to my wife for being back home, doing the hard yards.

"Trent Boult made it evident all day he wanted to take my outside edge. With my dismissal I just got out in front of myself.

"We've got three wickets left to add as many runs as possible and hopefully Dan can keep going. Then we'll see with the ball. It's set fair for a good day tomorrow."

England opener Rory Burns on Sky Sports: "It's been quite a tough day, but it was pretty even by the end. Dan played really well and got us back in it nicely. There is something in the surface for everyone.

They came back hard at us after lunch. It swung a bit more, whether that was conditions overhead or the surface, we'll have to see when we bowl."

Dan Lawrence's innings was exactly what England needed. The situation helped him because they lost a couple of wickets and he needed to build a partnership and he was able to attack and play his natural game.

Some of his cover drives were brilliant.

More from Rory Burns on TMS: "I've only had the experience of facing Trent Boult once but he's got a good skillset and is always swinging it so he's always challenging you.

"Dan Lawrence has played beautifully - he's probably the one batsman who has played with some fluency and made it look quite easy at times. It is a massive feather in his cap."

It is a concern that Zak Crawley has got out three times in similar fashion. That was a timid prod.

He is a young player and he got that big double century last summer but he struggled in the winter. You could see him today on the camera, it's prominent, and he's saying "watch the ball, watch the ball" and I just wonder if he's trying too hard. It could be so big and so important that you forget to the get the rhythm of just casually staring at the ball.

He will know he shouldn't get out to that ball.

Does Crawley deserve his spot in the test team at the moment? Take away his mammoth score against Pakistan and he averages just 19 - I have a sneaky feeling Malan could be the England's answer at 3

Rory Burns has played great. I thought he looked better today than his hundred at Lord's, that was a proper graft and a working-style hundred.

Today, he wasn't in free-flowing style, but his balance was excellent.

Playing a little bit of county cricket has really benefited him. He looks in good rhythm and like he's got good alignment.

  12. 'The pitch was a little two paced'published at 18:35 British Summer Time 10 June 2021

Rory Burns talking to TMS: "It was very enjoyable to be batting with a crowd. They have been pretty vocal all day and it's been to be back out there with some spectators.

"I feel in quite nice rhythm at the minute, so it is just about keeping that going as long as possible and keep improving in the nets.

"The surface started probably slightly damp and has been a little bit two paced throughout the day and it started to swing more after lunch. There were some tricky encounters out there but I think we've got through OK."

Olly Stone and Mark Wood played very well to support Lawrence.

England will resume tomorrow on 258-7, with Lawrence unbeaten on 67 and Wood on 16 not out.

Plus, the fun of Stuart Broad giving it a whack to come.

The hosts desperately need at least 300, you feel.

The support that Mark Wood and Olly Stone have given Dan Lawrence means England could still get to 300.

You still feel like they'll be lucky to get the sort of score they imagined this morning when Joe Root won the toss.

Mark Wood safely in behind to defend the final delivery of the day.

A belting day of Test cricket.

England on top early on, especially with Rory Burns in form again, before a customary collapse left them in real trouble at 175-6.

But Dan Lawrence, with support from Olly Stone and Mark Wood, has given them a chance.

And all in front of 17,000 very vocal fans. As close to normality as Test cricket in England has been for a long time.
