  1. Eng 8-0published at 1.3 overs

Matt Henry to Dom Sibley to start the second over.

And Sibley gets off the mark with a trademark clip through mid-wicket for two.

Bit loose from Henry to start - a no-ball and then a big wide that Tom Blundell does very well to dive and pouch.

  2. 'I remember the worry of not being good enough'published at 11:08 British Summer Time 10 June 2021

James Anderson, who plays an England record 162nd Test, told BBC Sport: "The things that stand out are the amazing wins - beating Australia in Australia, beating India in India, things that to many England teams have done.

"That's what makes this game special, being able to share those moments with your team-mates. Test match cricket is hard, so when you come through and get victories it makes it really special.

"I remember the worry of not being good enough for this level, but the more I've worked at it and understood my game, the more I felt like I've belonged here."

  3. Eng 4-0published at 1 over

Rory Burns' gets the first runs and the first boundary of the Test as a thick outside edge runs through a gap in the cordon and away to the rope for four.

Probing over that by Trent Boult.

The World Test Championship final has got in the way of this series a little bit. It is a moot point.

It'll be fascinating to see how the final is played next week.

It's a lot of changes for New Zealand. There's an eye towards the World Test Championship final next week.

  6. Eng 0-0published at 0.3 overs

Burns defends the second then has a little poke at the third delivery that leaves him and beats the outside edge.

Oooh and aahs from New Zealand.

    Jerusalem from the England fans.

Those few moments before the game were absolutely spine-tingling.

The roar from the crowd to greet the teams, the players drinking it all in. It was like long-separated friends being reunited. The sort of emotional greeting you see at an airport.

The moment of unity was poignant.

    All in all, moving stuff.

  8. Eng 0-0published at 0.1 overs

Decent shape from Boult but Burns reads the line well and leaves as the ball zips past where a fifth stump might've been.

Trent Boult to Rory Burns first up.

    Left-armer to left-hander.

    Here we go...

  10. 'England's balance doesn't quite feel right'published at 11:02 British Summer Time 10 June 2021

    Sir Alastair Cook
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

I agree with Michael Vaughan about Jack Leach playing actually. The temperature could be 30 degrees on Saturday and sunday and the county cricket I've played this summer the pitches have dried out so quickly.

It is hard to balance a side without the all-rounders, but it just doesn't quite feel right for me. Joe Root is bound to try and put a good spin on it. It just doesn't quite feel right as a captain.

Another huge roar after the important message of unity to mark James Anderson's 162nd Test cap.

He'll very much be hoping not to be bowling today though.

England openers Rory Burns and Dom Sibley stride out to the middle.

  12. 'Anderson is bowling better than ever'published at 11:00 British Summer Time 10 June 2021

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

Jimmy Anderson still absolutely loves cricket. I don't know how many years he's got left because a year or two ago I thought another three or four years. I honestly don't want to say how many years he may have left, because he's bowling better than ever, he's fitter than ever so I think we're going to see for a little bit longer.

James Anderson leads England out onto the pitch at Edgbaston for the moment of unity alongside the New Zealand team.

A massive roar - so many storylines around this match we've not been able to mention yet that there are 17,000 - yep, 17,000 - fans in Edgbaston today.

Still a long way to go and we still need to be very cautious but it's very special to hear a crowd make a noise like that at a cricket match again.

I'm amazed Kyle Jamieson isn't playing for New Zealand - he hasn't played that much Test cricket, obviously he's only played one game here in England, so unless he has a niggle we don't know about.

I'm surprised they've made so many changes.

  15. 'Changes a mixture of injuries and resting'published at 10:55 British Summer Time 10 June 2021

New Zealand captain Tom Latham talking to TMS: "It is obviously wonderful to have the crowds in, I know you were starved of the last summer, so to have people back in here and getting behind the sides."

On the changes: "It's a mixture of injuries and resting guys for what we've got coming up in a week's time. It is a great opportunity for the guys coming in, they've all played Test cricket before, so it is a great opportunity to see the depth of our squad."

A good day to bowl?: "We'd probably have had a bat too, but we've got some overheads that we can hopefully work with and hopefully we can start well this morning".

  17. 'I can't believe I've got this far'published at 10:50 British Summer Time 10 June 2021

James Anderson told BBC Sport: "It is special - I can't believe I've got this far. It has been an amazing journey over the last few years. I got a nice phone call from Alastair Cook last night, which means a lot from such a great mate, and to go past him is very special.

"I did sleep last night - I think that helps with age, you sleep a lot easier. There were some nerves flying around last night and this morning, as there always is with a Test match, especially with one that has something riding on it. It is nice to have those nerves."

You can almost guarantee that James Anderson will perform to an incredibly high level if his body allows him so it is just testament to the bloke who has tried to get better and better, and he has.
