He really didn't know whether to play or duck then and just let him hit it.

He got lucky as well that it hit his helmet after the glove because if it hadn't then that might well have looped to second slip.

Ross Taylor had to really graft hard and dig deep yesterday.

Stuart Broad is pumped this morning. Perhaps because Ross Taylor has just thumped him to the cover boundary, but he sends down a well-directed bouncer which gets Taylor all tangled up and the ball cannons up off his gloves and catches the grille of the helmet.

Taylor gives Broad a little thumbs up.

That was a very optimistic shout for lbw. That was going down the leg side.

  5. NZ 245-3published at 79.1 overs

Stuart Broad loves an appeal, doesn't he?

He hits Ross Taylor on the pad, but it is going well down the leg side.

He fancies getting Taylor here, though. You can feel him zoning in on those pads.

I liked Nick Hoult's description of Dan Lawrence's action in The Telegraph as a man changing a lightbulb above his head.

  7. NZ 245-3published at 79 overs

I understand that Joe Root wants the new ball quickly this morning, but why is Dan Lawrence bowling? He's given away nine from that over, and New Zealand's deficit is now down to 58.

Surely James Anderson or Mark Wood - whoever is going to take the new ball - could have bowled that over to get loose and be bang ready for that new ball?

    This is England.

Fifties have been thin on the ground for Ross Taylor recently.

He didn't look like he'd get anywhere near it at the start yesterday but this is what experience does for you. He's really grafted.

50 for Taylorpublished at 11:10 British Summer Time 12 June 2021

Emphatic! Ross Taylor might not always be the best starter, or in the best of nick at the moment, but that's a shot. He gets down on one knee and absolutely crunches a sweep again to move to his 54th 50-plus score in Test cricket.

That comes a ball after he'd nicked away, down the leg side, for four but Richard Illingworth gave four leg byes. Taylor was not impressed.

Dan Lawrence is going to continue for England.

Ross Taylor may be in in terms of his score. But he is not always the best starter when resuming a knock.

The first 20 balls to him are crucial. England will be thinking that if they get him out, it's not long before Neil Wagner at eight.

There should never have been a single there. Dan Lawrence seemed to take an age to get round and then line up the throw.

Henry Nicholls, smothered in suncream, looks good already. He played a lovely flick to pick up three at the start of the over.

Comfortably home - a waste of time checking that.

Joe Root is NOT happy that a single was taken there.

Halfway down he was in trouble but Dan Lawrence took a bit too long lining up the throw.

  16. Umpire reviewpublished at 11:04 British Summer Time 12 June 2021

Have England got Henry Nicholls run out here?

I think he is comfortably home, but Richard Illingworth has sent it upstairs to be safe.

  17. Postpublished at 11:03 British Summer Time 12 June 2021

Stuart Broad is going to get proceedings going from the other end.

He was superb yesterday, and arguably deserved a lot more reward than his two wickets.

Dan Lawrence is a very, very confident bowler. He's always saying 'give me the ball - I can get him out'.

  19. NZ 230-3published at 77 overs

Ew. A horrid full bunger from Dan Lawrence is swept round the corner by Henry Nicholls to get off the mark.

Ross Taylor, who had to dig deeeeep yesterday, blocks out his first delivery of the day.

There's still thousands of England fans outside, but boy is it noisy in Edgbaston. The sun is beating down too.
