It isn't about comparing England and Australia at the moment, it is just about being the best team that you can be and England are absolutely nowhere near that at the moment.

  2. Eng 144-8published at 39 overs

Excellent stuff from Cross and Brunt, who are taking minimal risks but still managing to tick along at four an over. It's very frustrating for New Zealand who are at risk of letting England get away yet again.

England aren't that inferior to Australia in terms of ability, but they do have a softer underbelly.

This is the right England team - it is the strongest one. Apart from Nat Sciver obviously, maybe instead of Charlie Dean.

  5. Eng 140-8published at 38 overs

Cross chips the ball up in the air, but safely over the head of midwicket.

Then a bit more drama as there's a direct hit, the umpires take a look but Cross has just about got her bat down in time.

This is fast becoming an annoying little partnership for New Zealand.

The ball is coming on quite nicely to the bat. That makes it quite difficult to work out what is going on with England because Lea Tahuhu - she bowled really well and all of the wickets were caught behind, bowled or lbw - but there wasn't anything spicy in it that England shouldn't have been able to contend with.

Batting, for the first time today, is looking quite straightforward.

  8. Eng 134-8published at 37 overs

    Brunt 29, Cross 22

Kate Cross bravely leaves a ball from Hayley Jensen that nips back in close to the stumps. It's followed by a loud cry of "Oh my goodness!" from the bowler.

To make it worse, Cross edges the next ball past the keeper for four.

For the second time this summer Kate Cross has past her best score for England.

That is a lovely shot from Kate Cross.

  11. Eng 126-8published at 36 overs

Another crunching drive for four from Kate Cross, who is doing an excellent job. Every run is crucial for England.

The ball before she played and missed off Kasperek, and I thought I heard a noise but nobody on the field did. I must be hearing things in my old age.

The England batters have the ability to frustrate New Zealand and prolong this innings.

  13. Eng 119-8published at 35 overs

    Brunt 24, Cross 12

Another tight over from Hayley Jensen.

Katherine Brunt is such a competitor. She will be so stubborn out there.

We saw New Zealand chase wickets in the second ODI on Sunday when they were looking to wrap up the tail. They haven't done that today. They've kept it simple and stuck to their plans and they are just looking to build pressure with dot balls.

Kasperek also chipped in with the wicket of her opposite number Sophie Ecclestone.

  16. Eng 118-8published at 34 overs

Leigh Kasperek gets through her over very quickly and it's another economical one. She's doing a very tidy job for her captain here in just holding up and end and allowing Devine to rotate her seamers at the other end.

Those boundaries from Kate Cross will have frustrated New Zealand, though.

  17. Eng 116-8published at 33 overs

Lea Tahuhu finishes 10 overs with five wickets for 37 runs.

    Class.

What an excellent bit of punditry, Alex.

  19. Eng 114-8published at 32.2 overs

She can ramp it over the keeper's head for four, that's what!

That shot is one of Kate Cross' strengths.

She will love being on strike for the free hit. I'm putting it out there, she'll go for the paddle.
