Two overs before the new ball is due and Jason Holder is entrusted with getting through one of them.

He sends down a maiden to Joe Root.

The buzz of the England fans has petered out into a quiet hum as the toll of day's over exuberance in the Caribbean sunshine starts to be felt.

Years before Joe played for England, a die-hard Yorkshire supporter told us that Root was going to be the best batsman England had ever seen. 'Yorkie Dave', I think you might be right.

Jonny Bairstow, binoculars next to him, is peering over some paperwork on the England balcony making notes like a bird spotter holed up inside a hide. Actually, is that a sudoku he was doing?

Veerasammy Permaul is back into the fray and the left-arm spinner from Guyana is coming wide of the crease and putting some fizz on the ball.

Dan Lawerence nudges a single off his final ball to keep the strike as England pick up one run off the over.

Before this Test, Joe Root was very keen to single out Dan Lawrence for praise for his second innings knock in Antigua. His 37 off 36 was essential in England setting up the attacking declaration.

Sir Garfield Sobers is supping away on a refreshing glass of the local beer. He'll have enjoyed Joe Root's innings here.

Dan Lawrence fluently drives Jason Holder for four. The England batter gets a big stride in and it's well-timed to pierce the field.

West Indies are labouring a little. They need something from that new ball in just over three overs time.

West Indies all-rounder on BT Sport

You have to give credit to the batters. The Windies fielders could have helped their fielders more. John Campbell fumbled a run out chance. On a flat pitch on a day like this, you need that bonus from your fielders.

  7. Eng 205-2published at 75.4 overs

Kraigg Brathwaite, head shaven and designer beard, is round the wicket to Joe Root. The England skipper gets down low and reverse sweeps his opposite number for four.

England in cruise control in Bridgetown.

Not surprising that Jason Holder makes something happen as soon as he comes on.

The former West Indies captain has a very shrewd cricket brain, and he'll certainly have a plan for Dan Lawrence who so far has played a very refreshing innings.

  9. Eng 205-2published at 75.0 overs

West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder's sizable frame attacks the crease as the hosts attempt to dry up the runs for England.

Holder has bowled full and miserly before he drops a short one in fourth ball which Joe Root guides with a pull to deep square leg.

Dan Lawrence attempts to drive the penultimate ball of Holder's over and gets a thick edge...but it doesn't carry to Alzarri Joseph who is stationed in the slip cordon.

Peter Walters: Joe Root has now moved firmly into all-time great territory. It’s one thing to be a great batsman in a great side but too often he’s the only batter, and captaining as well, and he still piles on the runs.

Joshua da Silva seems to be singing along to the Barmy Army songs, adapting them a little bit for the West Indies, behind the stumps.

Perhaps it's in an attempt to bring a chuckle out of Joe Root or Dan Lawrence and break their concentration.

The England duo happy to milk singles off the part-time off-spin of West Indies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite.

Despite the pitch Kemar Roach is, typically, diligently sticking to the task in front of him without any grumbles.

He manages to tie down Joe Root to a maiden just before drinks as the England skipper leaves and defends six balls he cannot find a run off.

Dan Lawrence with a piece of nice timing to dispatch one of skipper Kraigg Brathwaite's tame off-breaks for four through the off side.

That was there to be hit, but emphatically put away by Lawrence.

That brings up the 200 for England.

Strong stuff from David Gower, who clearly feels this type of surface doesn't provide a great spectacle.

A maiden from Kemar Roach, who is keen to make the batters work for their runs by keeping it straight and in and around that fourth stump line.

When you think back to some of the pitches we've seen here down the years this one is a disappointment. In the good old days there was good pace, good bounce and good carry. Bowlers liked it and the batters thought "if we get in we'll be okay". At the moment we look like we're in a similar situation to Antigua. From what we have seen it's going to be difficult to prise people out. What might change is the rate of wear for the spinners.
