  1. Eng 161-2published at 63.1 overs

Dan Lawrence has some swagger here after back-to-back boundaries off Alzarri Joseph.

First a glorious cover drive, slightly uppish, before he nips back into his crease and plays a delicious late dab through third using soft hands.

The second was actually a no-ball - West Indies first extra of the innings - so that's another run on the total.

  3. Eng 153-2published at 63.0 overs

England happy to milk Veerasammy Permaul for singles at the moment and pick up three runs off his first two balls before Joe Root blocks out the rest of the over.

I like the look of Dan Lawrence. He's got energy, he's busy... he's just got something about him

  5. Eng 148-2published at 62.0 overs

Joe Root attempts to cut the second ball of Alzarri Joseph's over but gets a bottom edge on it and the ball races between the wickettkepeer and slip for a boundary.

Final ball of the over and Root is caught ball watching after Dan Lawrence drives down the ground and there's a communication mix-up.

Both players are momentarily at the non-striker's end but Root is able to scamper down to the striker's end before the ball can be sent to the wicketkeeper. A bit of a let-off for England.

Mark Collins: Is it any surprise the West Indies fans hardly bother going to Tests if they keep producing these totally dead pitches

  7. Eng 143-2published at 60.3 overs

Very nice from Dan Lawrence who plays a sumptuous late cut to left-arm tweaker Veerasammy Permaul. There's an element of risk about the shot from the Essex batter but he gets it behind Shamarh Brooks at backward point who gives chase, fruitlessly.

    Good intent again.

  8. Eng 138-2published at 59.0 overs

Joe Root swivels, with the ease of James Bond on a bar stool, and pulls the ball off his hip for a single down to square leg after Alzarri Joseph bangs in a short one.

Eager to rotate the strike, Dan Lawrence pokes one into the covers for a single and is only prevented from taking a second by a fine piece of fielding by Jermaine Blackwood.

    Carlos Brathwaite
West Indies all-rounder on BT Sport

You always love to see players coming in trying to exert some pressure on the bowlers. There wasn't much momentum in the game at all but Dan Lawrence has tried to spice it up.

Alzarri Joseph has the ball in hand to bowl the first over after tea. Joe Root is on strike.

I like Dan Lawrence because he is bristling when he gets to the crease. The six he hits is technique but it is also intent. What you need in a game like this is the ability to push on. In the middle order if you have Lawrence at four that acceleration is important.

Dan Lawrence has looked confident and composed at the Kensington Oval. A real opportunity for him to go after that first Test century in this match.

Francis Edwards: Feel like a half decent attack would have had England eight down or so today. West Indies bowling is not great.

A more positive session for England. Once again the West Indies over rate is as it should be - 29 overs bowled in that session. It shows that if World Test Championship points are deducted, people take note

Thanks Matthew. England are ticking along okay here. A good first-innings total will setup the game, and Joe Root will have that on his mind first and foremost.

I better step aside before someone accuses me of trying to jinx Joe Root. Here's Timothy Abraham.

Some members of the England party get to their feet on the dressing room balcony to applaud Joe Root and Dan Lawrence but also, I imagine, to stretch their legs after some easy viewing.

Root is 20 runs short of yet another century.

  18. Tea - Eng 136-2published at 18:41 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March 2022

And there ends another good session for England.

The players will take 20 minutes before going again.

  19. Eng 135-2published at 58 overs

The early signs have been promising from Lawrence. For the second innings in a row he has upped England's intensity on arriving at the crease.

Bonner's loopy leggies are decently placed but harmless.

Dan Lawrence is very highly rated. He showed a lot of promise on his Test debut in Sri Lanka at the start of last year, but lost his way a little since. But having been preferred to Ollie Pope, he played very unselfishly in the second innings in Antigua - he's now got a chance to build a proper Test innings in his style
