Jayden Seales back into the attack but his short stuff is meat and drink for Joe Root and Dan Lawrence with both men happy to use the pace of the ball and pull it for one down to long leg.

Neither batters looks in any kind of trouble on this pitch at the moment.

The Barmy Army enjoyed those two consecutive balls - applauding Dan Lawrence's fifty, and then Root's hundred. They've been in good voice here in Barbados.

Joe Root looked in great nick from the moment he came in. He's just carrying on his form from the last year. He said before the game that he'd put away the issue of him batting at three rather than four - his form is certainly showing that.

That is Joe Root's 25th Test century, by the way.

Kemar Roach just about to return to the West Indies attack as Kraigg Brathwaite shuffles his pack again.

England happy to work him into the gaps as they pickup five runs off the over.

Three figures for Joe Root who flicks a short one away to pick the single he needs off Alzarri Joseph. Well batted.

He raises his hands in the air, kisses the badge on his helmet and takes the adulation of the England fans in Bridgetown who roar with gusto: 'Rooooooooooooooooooooot'.

Lawrence has brought a breath of fresh air to the day. A positive start, but nothing reckless, nothing untoward... he's looked busy from the moment he came in.

I like what I'm seeing from Dan Lawrence. If you're not on song as a bowler he can really punish you.

Mark Burt: This is the sort of pitch that has bowlers waking up in a cold sweat. No wonder Craig Overton pulled a sickie. I actually think it’s worse than Antigua.

Dan Lawrence, 49 not out, sees a leg bye go off his pad attempting to work Veerasammy Permaul round the corner.

England skipper Joe Root gets some bat with a similar shot before punching the ball through the covers for a couple. He's unbeaten on 99 now.

A century stand by these two.

John Campbell will not want to see this again.

A routine pull from Joe Root off Alzarri Josrph's second delivery nutmegs the West Indies man and the ball goes to the boundary for four.

A couple of balls later he fields it cleanly and the crowd roar in faux celebration.

It's a flat pitch here - England should have their eye here on at least 350 or 400.

  17. Eng 170-2published at 65.0 overs

Veerasammy Permaul makes Dan Lawrence wait for his fifty with a maiden over.

Lawrence had his heart in his mouth when he plays a cut shot to Permaul's final delivery and Joshua da Silva scrambles to take a catch after the ball struck his helmet and appeals.

The umpires, however, are unmoved. It was close to the edge of the bat but the technology shows there was no edge.

Here's where Lees' innings is so valuable. It has allowed Lawrence to come in and play his natural game, because the ball has stopped moving. He doesn't have to try and temper himself first. Sure enough, he's striking at 80+

    Root 88, Lawrence 49

Joe Root edges closer to three figures by caressing another pull down off Alzarri Joseph to the deep square.

A short delivery from Joseph to Dan Lawrence from the penultimate ball of the over and he confidently gets himself in line before pulling the ball for four.

He's one run away from a fourth Test half-century as the umpires get together to decide on a ball change.
