Root looks to Ben Stokes for a bit of magic. But there is no bag of tricks. A tidy over, on third or fourth stump, but easily dealt with by Jermaine Blackwood.
Brathwaite's century came off 278 balls and is his third Test ton against England. It may not be the most entertaining cricket, but the Barbados crowd cheered loudly for their skipper. They appreciate the importance of his knock.

While we've focussed on England's bowling, perhaps we've deflected attention from Brathwaite's typically dogged innings. He's gone quietly about his business, nothing flamboyant. He's played well as the pitch is offering some challenges.
WI 238-3
He dug in. He did what needed to do. And he has a century for his efforts.
Kraigg Brathwaite guides the ball to third man to reach triple figures for the 10th time in Test cricket.

Stop feeling sorry for bowlers who take wickets with no balls. It's totally preventable.

Saqib, putting the disappointment of the previous over behind him, continues.
Brathwaite takes a single, moving to 98. Blackwood nudges into the leg side for two well-taken runs.
The partnership is now worth 135. England desperately need a breakthrough.

Charlie: Whether Jimmy and Broady liked it or not, it was a very good decision to leave them out of the squad. After the overs they have put in in their careers so far, imagine sending them out on these body killing roads disguised as cricket pitches.
Five dot balls from Leach and then an outside edge which earns West Indies two more, the ball squeezing past leg-slip.
From pure jubilation to pure frustration. Saqib takes his cap and trudges back to his fielding position.
In fact, Ben Stokes had already embraced Mahmood and had his arm round him before England noticed it was a no-ball.
A horrible moment for the debutant.

No, no, no, no, no.
Saqib Mahmood bowls Jermaine Blackwood with a beauty of a yorker. The seamer dashes to his team-mates with a huge grin, ready to celebrate a first Test wicket. He turns round and notices the umpire's stretched out right hand. No-ball.

More chopping and changing from Root as Leach returns.
Bounce and turn from the spinner. He finds the rough and a leading edge, but Blackwood is safe. One from the over.
Brathwaite 96, Blackwood 63
Shot! It's too full and Brathwaite punches Saqib Mahmood back down the ground for a boundary. Timed to perfection.
The West Indies skipper is one shot away from a 10th Test century.
Blackwood pushes down on the helmet and a large amount of swear pours out. It's easy to point to good batting conditions, but he's made the most of his opportunity today.
Zak Crawley claps from the slips to encourage Fisher. It's a limp clap - as if he's at a work away day and the finance team have just given a presentation on last year's revenue.
Better from Leach. Pitched up and skewed into the off side by Blackwood for a streaky single. Aside from that, pretty comfortable for the West Indies pair.
Brathwaite is on 90 and Blackwood on 63.
Nice from Jermaine Blackwood. He's up on his toes and guides the ball through backward point for four classy runs.
Make that back-to-back boundaries. Fisher adjusts his line but is too straight this time and Blackwood pierces the field on the off side.
Fisher ends the over with a yorker which is dug out well, but another decent over for the hosts.
Joe Root turns to spin, bringing Jack Leach back on. Whatever the plan is, it's not working as Brathwaite prods and pokes away a maiden. Easy as you like.

Jim (18:49), I admire your optimism, but of the five bowlers you name, two are virtually retirement age, and two more spend more time injured than they do on the field. The reality is somewhat different to your rather rose-tinted view on the short term future of this English attack.
Ady, Leicester
The TV camera pans to some England fans who are all dressed as Mr Motivator. They look very unimpressed, and subsequently uninterested, in their team's bowling performance.
A rising delivery from Fisher invites a play and a miss from Jermaine Blackwood.
