Woakes' first over with the new ball has hardly filled me with hope and expectation. We'll probably squeeze one more over in.

Re praising Fisher for good control...it's kind of the bare minimum isn't it? Like the footballer who 'puts a shift in'. We need pace. Fisher/Overton/Woakes/Robinson will always have control but only be effective in bowler friendly conditions.
Jasper in Verwood (lacking in pace himself)
Brathwaite 75, Blackwood 46
England's bowlers will be feeling a tiny bit happier. The new ball is now available. What can England do with it? There are eight minutes to go until tea.
Chris Woakes is back but his comeback over is interrupted by the buckle on his boot breaking. He'll be keen to get the new ball in his hand in an over's time.

James Staples: I presume there have been several series where every match has been a draw, so this won't be the first, but it certainly looks like it will be the case here.
Jack Leach gets a pat on the back side at the end of the over. It's a much better over. The second lbw shout - the closer of the two - would have slipped down to miss leg stump. A good decision from Joel Wilson.
Leach has found a groove. Twice England go up for big lbw appeals but both are turned down. Finally something for the batters to think about.
England just have to hope the new ball brings this pitch to life a little. Ben Stokes brings about a bit of uneven bounce but there's not enough in the pitch for the ball to go to hand. Stokes shakes his head as a boundary is hit off the outer part of Brathwaite's bat at the end of the over.

It's frustrating that Leach has just beaten the bat with a sharply spinning ball - but he hasn't hit that length often enough today.

Oooooft. Jack Leach heard Aggers' analysis. He has just ripped one past the edge of Kraigg Brathwaite. It's the first false shot for a good while and somehow misses edge and off stump. More of that, please.
Brathwaite 68, Blackwood 41
When Leach turned the first ball of the day a long way I really thought England might be in business. Since then he hasn't had as much support and since lunch has been unable to hold his line and length consistently.

To have only taken two wickets so far today in these conditions has been very disappointing for England. There's still spin out there but Leach hasn't been threatening.

Olly Monk: Leach bowling well but England missed a trick not playing Parkinson someone with some variation and everyone knows leg spinners make things happen.
I'd have loved to see what Matt Parkinson could have done on this pitch.
Better from Stokes who throws his arms out wide and looks to the sky. He almost managed to get one to nip in and hit Jermaine Blackwood's pad. Blackwood nods in approval, waving his glove to say "that swung".

Jack Leach returns, again with little impact. Yesterday's play was really thrilling with Ben Stokes' sublime century. Today's has not been.
Things absolutely are not made to happen in this Stokes over. He's bowling with a ball that is nine overs away from being changed.
Brathwaite 66, Blackwood 38
Matthew Fisher continues after drinks. Joe Root watches on with a expression that looks more and more pained.
Sound the 'He Makes Things Happen' klaxon. Ben Stokes is coming on for a burst at the other end.

There's not much happening with the softer ball. The reverse swing has eased up in the last few overs. There are 11 overs until the next new ball which is a significant juncture. So just chop and change the bowling until then.

In the first Test I was critical of England's efforts with the ball in the first innings when they struggled for wickets. I think that would be harsh today. The bowlers have bowled well enough but with very little support from the pitch.
Joe Root bowls an off-spin bouncer before everyone wanders off to have a drink.
