Well that is just about your lot on what has been a compelling day of Test cricket in Grenada.

"Jack Leach and Saqib Mahmood were England's unlikely saviours" is the verdict of my colleague Matthew Henry.

A little more from Saqib Mahmood before we wrap up.

He said: "I thought West Indies bowled exceptionally well and the wicket assisted them. We lost the first two sessions but got that last session as a win. You can see some of the balls people got out too they were good balls. There was a lot in the wicket.

"I think tomorrow it's a case of being disciplined and holding lengths. They only got a few wickets in the morning but reaped rewards in the afternoon. We have got to drag the batters forward. That first session will be crucial."

Saqib Mahmood is in his second Test match. He bowled well in his first Test and he's held an end in a second Test - it is really promising signs. It shows a lot of character.

I know Saqib will feel disappointed not to get to 50 but he really shouldn't. He's batted for England for the first time ever, gone in at number 11, he's top scored, got a quarter of his team's runs, rescued them from total ignominy and got England's 9th highest ever 10th wicket partnership to boot. Not a bad day's work all round.

Saqib Mahmood, speaking to BT Sport at the close of play, said: "It was good fun once we initially saw off Alzarri Joseph and Jayden Seales. It was hard to score on against the slow bowlers but managed to cash in after.

"I had tunnel vision of getting a half-century when on 49 but a 96-run partnership is the important thing. If you listen to me the dressing room I'll claim all-rounder status. The lads have all said it is all downhill from here.

"I must be honest when I saw they were all sat in whites ready to get out on the field it kind of spurred me on."

I wouldn't say England have won the day because they are still below par but they have grabbed the momentum.

A couple of thoughts from Saqib Mahmood on his innings incoming.

  8. How's stat?!published at 21:53 Greenwich Mean Time 24 March 2022

Saqib Mahmood's 49 is the fourth-highest score by England's number 11 in a Test match. His fellow Lancashire seamer James Anderson is top with the 81 he made against India at Trent Bridge in 2014.

I was rather depressed a couple of hours ago, but that stand has done wonders.

This has been a lesson for England about how soft the ball goes once it's old. They have to emulate the way the West Indies bowled with the new ball in the morning. This is the sort of pitch on which Stuart Broad and James Anderson would have been a handful, but it's up to their replacements to do it here in Grenada.

Joe Root got a good delivery - anybody could get one of those.

You could probably nit pick at all the dismissals. When you're against it you just want to be able to break the momentum the bit and England weren't able to do that.

Jack: England's No 10 & 11 have scored four runs less than the remaining top nine!! This is why we love this game.

  13. Postpublished at 21:40 Greenwich Mean Time 24 March 2022

A curiously fascinating day of Test cricket.

If you'd have offered West Indies the chance to bowl England all out for 204 on day one they would have bitten your hand off.

Yet somehow, it feels like England have come out of the day with the momentum behind them.

Certainly the day was a refreshing change from what we saw earlier in the series on docile pitches which were neither conducive to quick runs nor offered much encouragement to bowlers.

West Indies lost their impetus and aggression but it was really high level skill from Jack Leach and Saqib Mahmood.

West Indies will be massively disappointed though.

That's stumps. A herculean effort from Jack Leach and Saqib Mahmood might well prove the defining period of this Test match.

    Leach finishes unbeaten on 41.

Stick with us, we'll doubtless hear from one of Leach or Mahmood in due course.

Such a shame for Mahmood, who was eyeing his first ever fifty in any professional cricket.

    Mahmood b Blackwood 49

Heartbreaking for Saqib Mahmood in a way as England are all out for 204.

It's a little short and Mahmood ends up a caught in two minds and chops on attempting to push at it, rather than giving it the kitchen sink.

  18. Eng 204-9published at 89.3 overs

Jermaine Blackwood's spin to finish the day off as there is time for one more over and Saqib Mahmood blocks out his first two balls.

Next ball Mahmood dances down the track and almost takes the head of Jack Leach off. He moves on to 49.

  19. Eng 200-9published at 89.0 overs

Jack Leach happy to block out to Kraigg Brathwaite rather than attempt to pick up some runs while he's in at the end of the day.

The psychology of bringing West Indies back out there tomorrow uppermost in his thinking. Another maiden over.
