The light meter is out with readings being taken. Jack Leach was having a little whine and moan about it earlier.

Kraigg Brathwatte told he must bring the spinners on and promptly hands his cap to the umpire.

The longer we bat, we he more the pitch decays. West Indies have to bat last. Why are some people moaning?

I was half joking when I said these two would make 200 and get through to the close of play with their wickets in tact.

A delivery from Alzarri Joseph sees the ball lodged in Saqib Mahmood's pad and he almost kicks it on to his stumps.

Fair to say the stone-faced Joseph does not see the funny side.

    A maiden.

These two haven't just defended, they've played shots, too. They've looked in no trouble at all.

    Leach 41, Mahmood 45

Four overs of play left in the day as Jason Holder gets his turn to try to break this partnership.

He catches the edge of Jack Leach's bat with his second delivery but the ball does not carry to second slip who takes it on the half volley.

A terse exchange between Leach and Holder follows. West Indies won't bat now if England's last wicket was to fall.

Extraordinary to read criticism of a team for trying to bat through to the end of the first day of a Test match rather than be all out by tea. What has Jack Leach and Saqib Mahmood's partnership achieved? Just the small matter of almost doubling England's total.

    Saqib Mahmood can bat.

Alzarri Joseph is full and a Mahmood simply times it beautifully to drive the ball to the boundary through mid-off for four.

That's the 200 up with a glorious stroke.

There's plenty of disconsolate-looking West Indies cricketers on the field of play now.

Dan: This is why I love the England side and Test cricket generally. A side can be abject in their batting until two tailenders get in and bat like they average 50 and the bowling side fall to pieces. Love to see it

The tireless Kemar Roach is puffing and panting on his way to the crease giving his all as we edge to the close of play.

Jack Leach has the smirk of the class swot who knows all the answers after he keeps out the final ball of his over.

This may seem far-fetched, but might England consider declaring here? Would give them 10 minutes to bowl at the West Indies openers tonight...

Ross: This last wicket stand has taken our performance from “catastrophic shambles” to an “underwhelming” performance. Excellent work!

  12. Eng 195-9published at 84.0 overs

A measure of how well Jack Leach has played here is how he's able to adapt and twice keep out vicious late-inswinging yorkers from Jayden Seales in that over

Easy to latch on to the character in a knock like this, but this is just reward for the hours upon hours Leach will have put into working on his technique.

  14. Eng 194-4published at 82.3 overs

Super stuff from Jack Leach as the bespectacled Somerset man is able to get a drive over point off Kemar Roach and away to the boundary for four.

    West Indies are decidedly bedraggled.

Saqib Mahmood squirts one beyond point with a square drive off Jayden Seales for four. He'll be eyeing that maiden Test half-century now.

Seales twice goes yorker length but his first full misses the stumps by a whisker while Mahmood digs out second.

Joshua da Silva looks to the heavens.

I'm not sure Shaun 20:44 understands the concept of trying to put runs on the board. This is a heroic partnership whether it's 2 or 20 an over. More please!

With the new ball has been taken this will be a very different test for Jack Leach and Saqib Mahmood.

England's top two scorers this innings are numbers 10 and 11.

More threat with the new ball, but the flip side is it goes quicker to the boundary as well.

Kemar Roach quick-steps his way to the crease and is able to get the ball to talk on a length.

However, Saqib Mahmood has a nice high elbow to defend, leaves well, then punches for three off the back foot to bring up his highest first-class score of 35.
