  1. Eng 53-3published at 30 overs

Another slice of luck for England - this time for Alex Lees.

He gets drawn into the drive - that isn't looking an easy shot on this pitch - and a thick inside edge goes past leg stump. That was millimetres away.

It runs away for four. It's a tough life being a bowler isn't it? You almost get someone out, but you end up conceding four instead.

  3. Eng 49-3published at 29 overs

    Lees 27, Stokes 2

A single apiece for Ben Stokes and Alex Lees - both through the on side.

Yeesh! Put that away Stokesy. Alzarri Joseph angles across him and Stokes goes to drive before tentatively withdrawing the bat at the final second.

    Good nut from Joseph.

An ear-splittingly loud parade went round the boundary during the lunch interval.

  5. Eng 47-3published at 28 overs

Just that single from the over as Kemar Roach tightens up his line and length and has Alex Lees defending and leaving.

This is the first time I've properly watched Lees - apart from that warm-up game that was kindly put on YouTube - and he looks to have a solid technique. We haven't always been able to say that about England openers in recent times.

It'll be Alzarri Joseph from the other end.

  6. Eng 47-3published at 27.3 overs

    Ben Stokes up and running.

The England all-rounder is already moving round the crease, trying to put Kemar Roach off, and it works as the experienced right-hander drops short - and wide - and he bunts a single into the covers.

    Right, time for some cricket.

Ben Stokes and Alex Lees are out in the middle. Two Durham lads (well, a player of Durham in Lees' case) so we should see plenty of grit.

Kemar Roach will start with the ball.

This could be a very important session in deciding the destiny of this Test and ultimately the series.

Movement always creates a little bit of liveliness and it hasn't been easy for the batters.

I thought Alex Lees looked really impressive - it was the best we've seen of him in a Test shirt so far. I thought he looked compact. It was a good morning for him.

How typical of us to lose the toss in the only match in the series where it appears to matter! Need one big innings to get to a competitive score.

Alex Lees has played nicely for his 26 not out.

I thought Alex Lees and Zak Crawley had weathered the initial storm pretty well, but the latter once again played a loose drive to be caught at extra cover for just seven.

Joe Root then had a rare failure in recent times as he nicked a decent delivery from Kyle Mayers through to Joshua Da Silva behind the stumps.

Dan Lawrence was then pinned in front on the stroke of lunch and England are 46-3 at lunch, with Lees 26 not out.

    Sound familiar?

It looked as if the ball was swinging a lot more than in the first two Tests, so that is encouraging. They seem to have got their thinking caps on and got the decision spot on.

    Thanks Tim.

How are you all? Enjoying the familiarity of a difficult batting session for England, I hope.

Grab a drink, enjoy 20 minutes in the sun, and pray that the afternoon brings some runs.

West Indies could have had a lot more wickets - there's been lots of playing and missing from England.

  16. Postpublished at 16:13 Greenwich Mean Time 24 March 2022

West Indies have bowled with real discipline in that session. Executed their plans superbly. It's challenging stuff for England's top order.

Alex Lees and Ben Stokes have it within their techniques and temperaments to grind this out. A lot will hinge on their partnership in the afternoon session you sense.

Jacob Wadsworth: I know people don't want to, but can we give some credit to Lees, getting through to lunch as an opener in these conditions is a rarity!

A really interesting session. The score reflects what a battle it's been for England. The bowling has been spot on - only five boundaries in 27 overs.

I liked Kyle Mayers confidence - he just said he bowled brilliantly and I agree!

We know how important Joe Root is for this England side and to think they've got rid of him early - it's been a big start for the West Indies.

  20. Postpublished at 16:06 Greenwich Mean Time 24 March 2022

West Indies Kyle Mayers, who has 2-0 from five overs, in a flash interview before lunch: "I thought it was a good spell - I thought it was brilliant to get two wickets and concede no runs.

"I just tried to stick to my plans and stick to my stock ball as long as possible. It worked and I just wanted to stay patient.

"To get Joe Root is pleasing. I've got a few big batters out in my first West Indies' games and hopefully it continues."
