With Stokes carrying a niggle, England are going to need more from their other seamers after lunch.

Saqib Mahmood was impressive in his spell just before the interval and Craig Overton was causing the batters problems with the short ball.

The only seamer without a wicket to his name is Chris Woakes. Given this match has been billed as his last chance to prove himself as a viable option for England overseas - and apologies for stating the obvious - he could really do with changing that in the afternoon session!

You're looking at a team that has consistently got things wrong over the last few years, whether than be selection or at the toss.

They always seem to take an hour or an hour and a half to assess the conditions. You want to be ahead of the game. England are still very much in this Test match, if not a little ahead but to become a good team, they need to adapt quicker.

Waiting on all the positive messages now after three quick wickets! Truth still remains that we left our two best bowlers at home and came armed with a bowling attack not fit to play abroad. Fingers crossed we get the result, but more change needed during this 'reset' process.

Ben Stokes was the catalyst for England yet again. The concern for the tourists is that he has not bowled since taking that wicket and was off the field for some time. No word yet on what the issue is but there has got to be a serious question over whether he'll be able to bowl again in this innings. Or indeed, the match.

Once again, Ben Stokes on one leg gets the key wicket of Brathwaite. It was Stokes who got the ball in hand and said to the other bowlers, 'come on, we've got to bang it into the pitch.'

The last half an hour, England were excellent.

England recovered after a start in which they didn't bowl enough balls in the right places. A couple of shooters along the ground, some well-directed short balls, and they're back in the game. Mahmood has been the pick of the bowlers.

    Thanks, Tim.

Well, that last half hour was a bit more like it from the England bowlers after a rather ominous first 90 minutes of the day in which West Indies' openers looked in little bother.

A slow burner of a session which came alive after Ben Stokes got that crucial breakthrough. Craig Overton and Saqib Mahmood presented different challenges for the West Indies batters and worked well in tandem.

Much to ponder over lunch, and an intriguing afternoon to follow. My colleague Sam Drury is on hand to talk you through it all in his own inimitable fashion.

When Kyle Mayers took those early wickets he kissed the surface rather than floating it up there. With the inconsistency of bounce that can help which gives options for all the bowlers.

"There's still 10 seconds!" Jonny Bairstow says to the umpires with a tongue-in-cheek remark but it's deadpanned by the officials.

    That's lunch.

A maiden from Saqib Mahmood before lunch as he finishes with a beauty to Nkrumah Bonner which cuts him in two, goes through the gate, and just misses off stump.

Mahmood has head in his hands. He cannot believe that ball hasn't hit something.

It was very much a short-ball field that Craig Overton had for John Campbell. No slips, three men out for the hook, and while catches down the legside are sometimes considered to be fortunate, when you're bowling like this, it's entirely legitimate.

Saint Alastair: Good bowling from England but have to say how great it is having a top class keeper behind stumps. As a former keeper (at rubbish village level), I love watching Ben Foakes and his superb footwork. Makes taking catches down the leg-side look so easy, reads bounce and line quickly.

"Tell you what Man Utd would take him on!" Jonny Bairstow, at short leg, pipes up after Nkrumah Bonner deftly kicks one away from his stumps after keeping one out from Craig Overton.

    He has you know.

Craig Overton's aggressive short-pitched bowling brings him a reward this time as he angles it across left-handed John Campbell.

Campbell attempts to work it off his hip but it brushes the glove on the way through and Ben Foakes gobbles up the catch.

England have the bit between their teeth.

    It's all happening.

Has John Campbell been strangled down the leg side here?

He's given not out on the field but is there a flick of glove on this?

    Ben Foakes seems convinced.

We've seen two great examples of the variable bounce we've talked about. A bowler like Mahmood, with a low-slung, skiddy action, is ideal for this sort of surface.

It's a similar appeal (or lack of it) for an lbw from Mahmood.
