Saqib Mahmood, with a towel flapping away in the back of his trousers, attacks the crease with purpose.

There's already a greater intensity and enthusiasm in the England slip cordon.

His fourth ball spits up at Kraigg Brathwaite and the West Indies skipper has to play it with soft hands. A maiden to start from the Lancashire quick.

Huge round of applause as Saqib comes on. It's worth remembering that West Indies didn't take a wicket until the 13th over yesterday, but there was plenty of playing and missing from the England openers.

A slightly sullen Joe Root has reacted to this underwhelming start and summons one of yesterday's heroes Saqib Mahmood into the attack.

England haven't beaten the bat once yet.

  5. WI 16-0published at 7.0 overs

I think the momentum England had from yesterday's knock by Saqib Mahmood and Jack Leach is starting to ebb away.

"Very ordinary" is how Curtly Ambrose has just described England's start with the ball so far.

A maiden from Chris Woakes to Kraigg Brathwaite but a very unthreatening one.

Mark: Is there a more insipid and unthreatening opening attack in world cricket than Woakes and Overton? Hope they make me eat my words but based on these first few overs I doubt it.

  7. WI 16-0published at 6.0 overs

A gift from Craig Overton with his third ball.

It's short and wide outside off stump allowing John Campbell to ruthlessly dispatch it away through the point region.

Joe Root has his arms folded. Not impressed

Chris Woakes has to get the mindset to show he is somewhere else. There's a flag here from Leamington Spa, which isn't too far from Birmingham, so if he can look at that flag and think he's somewhere in the West Midlands then go hit a length.

  9. WI 12-0published at 5.0 overs

Chris Woakes wipes the sweat off his brow with a chunk white sweatband on his left wrist.

The final ball of his over is the right length and extracts brings an exaggerated lightsaber leave from Kraigg Brathwaite.

Not much to write home about for England's opening pair just yet.

It's a pitch which can offer some seam movement. Hopefully this could be a day for Chris Woakes to stand up.The bowlers are going to have to execute the plans Joe Root has for them.

Tim L-G: Chris Woakes needs a good day with the ball today. Lucky to have been included in many peoples eyes.

  12. WI 8-0published at 4.0 overs

Craig Overton drops one a little short to John Campbell and the West Indies opener rocks back and steers it down behind square.

Kraigg Brathwaite works a single off the last ball of the over down to fine leg to keep the strike.

Overton still finding his radar to the left and right handers.

England need to be getting the batters to play on this pitch. Kraigg Brathwaite was able to leave every ball of that first Chris Woakes over.

  14. WI 4-0published at 3.0 overs

John Campbell leaves a threatening delivery from Chris Woakes' third ball which whistles just past his off stump prompting oohs and ahhs from the England slip cordon.

Next ball a thick edge from Campbell goes racing away through the gully region but the fleet-footed Alex Lees is able to dive back flick it back to prevent the boundary.

My my. Four England fans from Rugby have turned up as ABBA.

Gimme Gimme Gimme a first innings lead... With the series tied going into the final Test, it really is The Winner Takes It All.

Kraigg Brathwaite has led the way with the bat. If you can't win a cricket match then you grind out a draw. It won't be as easy for him as it was in Barbados.

  17. WI 1-0published at 2.0 overs

John Campbell off the mark straight away off Craig Overton after working him neatly off his hip.

Overton follows up with a yorker-length delivery to Kraigg Brathwaite which is well kept out by the West Indies skipper.

His fifth ball is full and swinging away but Brathwaite is able to dead bat it into the pitch. Solid stuff from the Somerset seamer.

Woakes waited at the top of his mark for the Barmy Army to finish Jerusalem. All the players turned and applauded, before Woakes began his run up.

Good to see the first couple of deliveries from Woakes go through nicely to the 'keeper.

  20. WI 0-0published at 1.0 overs

Nice shape and lines from Chris Woakes as his third ball beats the outside edge with Kraigg Brathwaite a little cautious pulling his bat away.

The West Indies skipper content to leave the rest of the over well alone.

Promising maiden to start with from Woakes.
