Joe Root, sporting a white alice band to keep his blonde locks in place, brings himself into the attack in a bid to bring this innings to an end.

He strikes Jayden Seales on the back leg with his first ball and England appeal wildly but it's turned down by the umpires. No reviews, remember.

Seales is able to pick up a single before Root sends down a bouncer with his final ball! It's not quite executed correctly, down leg side, and Ben Foakes does well to get a glove on it. He's fortunate it's not called wide.

    Da Silva 90, Seales 6

The run of maidens comes to a end as Joshua da Silva goes for a heave ho to Jack Leach's first ball but he misses it - and so does Ben Foakes - as West Indies pick up a couple of byes.

Two boundaries off Leach's fourth and six balls from Da Silva - a thump through the covers and a trademark whip through mid-wicket - and he has an eye on a century now.

This is where tomorrow will be so interesting when West Indies come to bat. It's so difficult to get obdurate batsmen out when the ball gets so soft. So while Seales averages just three in first-class cricket, he's able to defend very capably.

Craig Overton employs the short stuff with Jayden Seales, but the West Indies tailender handles it fairly competently.

Another maiden. Back to Jack Leach again.

I wonder whether the future of Joe Root's captaincy will be determined by the outcome of this match, and if England manage a win, he'll probably be allowed to hang on a bit longer. It would be better if the 'powers that be' did the right thing now and accepted that he'll never be a great, instinctive captain. If they relieved him of this added responsibility, he could focus on being our best batsmen.

Jack Leach wheels through another maiden over - England's fifth in a row - to Joshua da Silva. Leach has 0-33 from 19 overs.

Cameras cut to the crowd at the Grenada National Cricket Stadium who, despite being extremely knowledgeable about the game, don't look entirely riveted about what's unfolding in front of then.

Anyone who watched Cummins and Starc blow the Pakistan lower order away on a dead pitch last week will have a particularly potent point of reference for just how far short our attack's skill levels are falling.

Where has Craig Overton been hiding? Too self-effacing to tell the skipper he should be bowling, maybe?

His first ball to Jayden Seales is spooned up and is just short of the fielder, and his second is an aggressive bouncer which sees the West Indies number 11 dumped to the ground while taking evasive action.

Overton draws an edge high off Seales' bat with his final delivery but he plays it with soft hands and it drops short of third slip.

Maybe Jack Leach didn't pick it up to get the correct response to come forward and take the catch. it was agonisingly short.

England stack the cordon to Jayden Seales - four slips and a gully now and then midway through the over Baristow comes in front of the bat at silly mid-off.

Ben Stokes' final ball is spooned up by Seales and Jack Leach, who is a little slow on his heels, comes bounding forward but is unable to get his hands under the ball.

Stokes closes his eyes, looks to the sky, and begins to go through his full repertoire of expletives.

Five dots from Jack Leach to Joshua da Silva.

Good thinking from the Somerset left-arm spinner as he fires his final ball quickly down the leg side and Ben Foakes gathers well.

Ben Stokes gets potentially another six at Jayden Seales.

Lots of barbs for Joe Root. With the exception of Ben Stokes I'm not sure there are many other candidates for the England captaincy, really.

English all-rounders are stigmatised as incapable of being good captains and excelling with their own individual performance - based on stints by Andrew Flintoff and Ian Botham, perhaps.

    Could Stokes buck that trend?

A copy-and-paste over from the flame-haired all-rounder as Joshua da Silva collects his obligatory single.

Loyalty is important, but not at the expense of progress. Joe Root is a world class batter but a poor captain. Always has been. He should have the insight to step aside, or be told to

    Da Silva 78, Seales 6

A half-hearted appeal for lbw when Jack Leach strikes Joshua da Silva on the pad as he attempts to sweep, but it's sliding down leg.

Leach manages five dots to Da Silva and Joe Root tweaks the field ahead of the left-arm spinner's final delivery.

Almost inevitably, Da Silva gets the single required with a little tip-and-run dab through extra cover.

Jayden Seales has six balls to face from Ben Stokes and keeps the England all-rounder at bay.

In six Tests and nine first-class matches Seales has a top score of six. He will have one eye on double figures here.
