  1. Aus 89-4published at 38 overs

    Labuschagne 15, Head 20

Anderson is bang on with his first over of this second spell, just a single comes from it. Ollie Robinson is still in off-spin mode, which will help the over rate as well - don't forget, England were fined their entire match fee in the first test for bowling too slowly.

  2. Aus 88-4published at 05:31 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2021

    Labuschagne 15, Head 19

Ollie Robinson's off spin gets a bit of bounce and turn - his action is slightly Kevin Pietersen-like.

Jimmy Anderson is back to replace Chris Woakes at the other end.

  3. Aus 87-4published at 36.2 overs

Seamers who switch to spin - I saw Ian Botham do it once or twice, and Australia had Colin Miller in the 1990s who would start as a seamer and then go to his off-spin in the same spell.

Marnus Labuschagne clips Woakes off his pads for a four past square leg off the final delivery of his over.

  4. Aus 81-4published at 35 overs

That was a decent over of off spin from the Sussex paceman!

Joe Root is back out on the field and standing at slip as well, as this quiet session (ahem) trundles on...

  6. Aus 79-4published at 05:21 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2021

Ollie Robinson is bowling spin! What was in that coffee I had earlier?

Oh, and Joe Root is in the dug out.

    Anything else?

It's been a mixed session from Jos Buttler, but when he's been good, he's been very good.

  8. Aus 79-4published at 34 overs

    Labuschagne 10, Head 15

Woakes, from around the wicket, hits Head's pads and half-appeals. It was going down leg, but two balls later he goes closer as Head leaves one that flies just over his off peg.

  9. Aus 78-4published at 05:16 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2021

    Labuschagne 10, Head 14

Australia have come out of the blocks after drinks - Travis Head cracks Chris Woakes through the offside for another four, then gets two as another drive goes under Ollie Pope at cover.

  10. Aus 72-4published at 05:14 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2021

    Labuschagne 10, Head 8

That's nice from Marnus Labuschange, whipping Ollie Robinson off his pads through the leg side twice in successive deliveries for his first boundaries.

  11. Aus 64-4published at 05:10 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2021

    Labuschagne 2, Head 8

Travis Head looks like he has had enough of this tentative approach, as he pulls Chris Woakes through midwicket for four. That takes Australia's lead to over 300.

  12. What has happened so far?published at 05:08 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2021

Good morning. Just waking up or perhaps rolling over and checking the score in bed? Well... it has been quite the morning.

Firstly, Joe Root is not on the field after being hit in the unmentionables in the warm-ups. He has left the ground for a scan.

In a crazy first hour England took three wickets for 10 runs with the action relentless.

James Anderson bowled nightwatchman Michael Neser for three before Jos Buttler took a blinding catch off Stuart Broad to see off Marcus Harris for 23.

Buttler then put down an easier chance the very next ball which would have seen Steve Smith go for a first-ball duck and Smith survived the tightest of lbw reviews on the next delivery.

Smith didn't stay for too long, however, as he gloved Ollie Robinson down the leg side for six - this one a fine catch from Buttler.

Remarkable. Oh and there's been a Covid scare in the media centre at the ground which means if you are listening to radio commentary at the top of this page it will be coming via our ABC colleagues.

Take a look at England's unsuccessful review of an lbw call against Steve Smith.

  15. drinks break

    Drinks breakpublished at 31 overs

    Labuschagne 1, Head 4

That rarest of beasts - a boundary! Head rocks back and pushes Robinson through the offside to get off the mark off the last ball of the over, followed by the first drinks break of the day.

  16. Aus 55-4published at 30.4 overs

    Labuschagne 1, Head 0

Chris Silverwood looked to be giving the squad an impassioned speech just before play, following Joe Root's injury blow. Whatever he said, it certainly looks to have worked.

Travis Head is in, but Robinson gets one to bounce off a length outside the left-hander's off stump.

Australia are 10-3 in this first hour.

  17. Aus 55-4published at 04:58 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2021

    Labuschagne 1, Head 0

That was an excellent over from Ollie Robinson, who reminds me a bit of Angus Fraser. Chris Woakes then follows it up by getting Marnus Labuschagne, still only on one, to grope outside off stump.

  18. wicket

WICKETpublished at 04:54 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2021

    Smith c Buttler b Robinson 6 (Aus 55-4)

A brilliant catch by Jos Buttler!

Steve Smith nudges it down the leg side, but the England keeper dives down low to cling on to it just above the turf!

    My head is spinning.

  19. Aus 55-3published at 28 overs

    Labuschagne 1, Smith 6

Chris Woakes enters the fray and starts tidily with five dot balls.

Steve Smith drives just about wide enough of mid-off to scurry a quick single off the last to keep the strike.
