It has been a bizarre day all round, a reminder of the times we are living in. I thought England bowled really well in that first hour, with that fuller length we have talked about. They have not bowled full enough, and Smith, rather than get a bouncer barrage, had some lovely bowling from Broad who could have had him lbw for 0. It is frustrating they bowled that well when it was too late - the game is up and if they get a draw it will be a miracle.
Now if Starc cannot bowl either, that would make it interesting. Lyon will clearly be a threat. But if Starc cannot bowl that gives England a glimmer.

Impressive, Pablo.
The players are taking a drink. Still no sign of a declaration.

Mitchell Johnson (I'm shuddering just thinking about him) says on ABC that Starc will be OK as it is the left side of Starc's back he seems to have injured. He reckons that side will under less stress when bowling as Starc is a left-armer.
If you've just joined us and are listening to commentary wondering where the TMS team are, sadly they're not at the ground today because of a Covid case in the media centre in Adelaide.
I say that but Starc is still stretching his back out after the six. He put his hand onto the area straight away after completing the swing.
Starc is even shadowing his bowling action with his pads, helmet and gloves on.

This is interesting...
Mitchell Starc looks like he might have tweaked something in his back trying to heave Joe Root for six. He's stretching it out.
Rory Burns is at slip. I wonder what he's thinking?
Starc hits one for six a couple of balls later.
Just getting up? Right-o, here's what's been happening....and there's been quite a bit!
England took three quick wickets at the start of play as nightwatchman Michael Neser, opener Marcus Harris and captain Steve Smith all fell
The Australia skipper was also dropped first ball by Jos Buttler, but the England keeper took two brilliant catches in an up-and-down first session.
England captain Joe Root was off the field for a scan after taking a blow in a delicate area during the warm-up but returned 18 overs into the day.
Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne then went on the attack to extend the lead, both finally falling for 51.
Head was dismissed by a sensational Ben Stokes diving catch, before Labuschagne also picked out Stokes off the part-time leg-spin of Dawid Malan - his first Test wicket.
Root bowled Alex Carey as Australia moved towards a likely declaration.

Australia's score is now such that England would have to break the world record for the highest fourth-innings chase to win this match. Australia could declare now. They're just waiting for it to get a bit darker.

Dawid Malan with a wicket at one end, Joe Root the same at the other. They're doing a lot of heavy lifting on this tour for England.

Brendan D'Arcy: Pine Mountain Club, California. 1,800 person town. Might be able to rustle up a better 11 than England
Still no declaration. Mitchell Starc wanders out.
Carey b Root 6 (Aus 180-7)
England have another wicket! I'm not sure if that's actually a good thing mind. Alex Carey tries to fiddle an off-side shot off his stumps but is bowled via an under edge.
Root may still be very sore but he has a wicket to brighten his mood.
Wooooft! Alex Carey is not going to hang around. Joe Root is on, bowling for the first time today after his injury earlier, and Australia's wicketkeeper smashes him a mile into the sky and for four over mid-on.

Former England bowler
The England batters will be nervously looking over their shoulder waiting for the declaration.

No declaration yet...
Alex Carey is out to have a swish.
Labuschagne c Stokes b Malan 51 (Aus 173-6)
Dawid Malan has a Test wicket! It's not the scenario he'd like but fair play to him. Marnus Labuschagne tries a slog off Malan's leg-spin but picks out Ben Stokes on the deep mid-wicket boundary.

James Anderson runs off in pursuit of a pushed drive from Cameron Green and I can't help but wonder if the 39-year-old has thought about packing it in over the last few days.
Ben Stokes' catch was good...
