Charlie: I love Root, as a person and player. I know the argument rightly is that there is no obvious replacement but how can you think a defensive field to a spinner not brimming with confidence to batters who can just nudge for four singles an over will achieve anything? Baffling.

Hmm. One of the umpires out in the middle has put his umbrella back up.

It's also worth watching the way Steve Smith runs off, protecting his bat like someone is about to yank it from his hands.

I didn't realise Steve Smith was also umpiring.

He's turning around and running off before the umpires have even made the signal.

  9. rain stops play

Rain stops playpublished at 00:16 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2022

    Ah.

It has got heavier and the players are now coming off.

  10. Aus 163-3published at 61.5 overs

Common sense has prevailed, with the players carrying on in rain that is so fine it is actually impossible to see on the camera lens.

    The groundstaff applaud the decision.

  11. Aus 163-3published at 61.3 overs

Jack Leach backs up his good over with a well-judged slide in the deep to stop Steve Smith clipping four off his pads.

Oh hang on, the umpires are convening again...

That was Jack Leach's first maiden in his 34th over of the series!

  13. Aus 160-3published at 61 overs

Usman Khawaja plays a series of nice shots to Jack Leach but can't beat the field, with Haseeb Hameed positioned at short leg and Zak Crawley at backward point. That's a maiden for Leach.

  15. Aus 160-3published at 60 overs

Jimmy Anderson zips through another tidy over. Steve Smith does another weird leave. Business as usual all round.

Roberto Colombi: English fielders' body language is abject when Jack Leach is bowling - they have no confidence he’ll ever take wickets but just bleed runs.

  17. Aus 158-3published at 59 overs

    Oh, shot!

Usman Khawaja gets down low and reverse sweeps Jack Leach for a handsome four. Nailed that.

As is now customary, day two is Richie Benaud day at the Test. How does this work? Are they the same people? How do they manage to get them all sat together? Do you have to state when buying the ticket if you're a Richie or not?

  19. Aus 152-3published at 58 overs

James Anderson completes his over without any further damage.

  20. Aus 152-3published at 57.4 overs

And the first ball of the resumption is driven for four!

Too full from James Anderson, overpitched, and Steve Smith bats it straight back past him and down the ground.
