I don't understand this field from Joe Root for Jack Leach to be honest. Both men back at long-on and long-off and deep cover giving an easy single. You want to create pressure as a spin bowler.

  2. Aus 144-3published at 55 overs

Too short from Leach, and Smith carves it away to pick up a couple of runs.

I... do not like this field. Bit too easy to get the singles.

Jack Leach is coming on for a bowl.

He was involved in my favourite moment of yesterday.

That's only the second ball we have seen really leap like that off the pitch but it shows you why both captains wanted to be bat first on this pitch with the cracks underneath which are only going to widen. Imagine what it will be like on day four and five.

  5. ouch!

    Aus 140-3published at 54 overs

    What's that hit?!

Anderson's third delivery explodes off the pitch, rising up on Khawaja and hitting him on the bottom hand as he presses forward in defence. Ouch.

First change of the day for England, with James Anderson replacing Mark Wood.

See, this is all Steve Smith's fault. I'm not sure I'm equipped for a generation of lightsaber leaves.

Smith adds another weird leave to his impressive tally as he thrusts his chest out at Broad as he falls to one knee leaving a leg side delivery. He is, genuinely, fascinating to watch.

I had an epiphany yesterday when leaving the ground. I walked past a couple of youngsters playing a knockabout game with a tennis ball and the kid batting left the ball in that strange exaggerated fashion Marnus Labuschagne does. It made me think that in 10 or 15 years we will see a host of young Aussie cricketers all doing it, and fidgeting about the crease like Steve Smith.

  9. Aus 138-3published at 52 overs

Width from Mark Wood, and Usman Khawaja drives it away nicely for his first runs of the day. He gets warm applause from the SCG crowd.

  10. Aus 133-3published at 51 overs

I prefer this sort of series. The odd sledge here and there is good - and Jimmy bowling Mitchell Johnson in 2010-11 after his "why are you chirpin' now, mate?" is one of the greats - but I just find it a bit embarrassing most of the time. It's cricket, lads.

Broad has his hands on his hips as several thick outside edges go flying off Steve Smith's bat and away for runs.

I can't remember an Ashes series as friendly as this one. There hasn't been one single face-to-face in four Test matches with a player frothing at the mouth. Usually there's someone snarling and desperate to say something but it's been unbelievably friendly out there.

  12. Aus 127-3published at 50 overs

I was reading that Usman Khawaja got his pilots licence before his driving one. Quite like the idea of taking a helicopter to the local shop for a pint of milk.

England can do something with this. It's not an astonishing platform they have got but it's certainly an opportunity.

  14. Aus 127-3published at 49 overs

    Smith 7, Khawaja 4

Steve Smith shows off an impressive bit of footwork, flipping the ball from the bottom of his bat onto his foot and then into Haseeb Hameed's hands as he's squared up by Stuart Broad.

    Jonathan Agnew

England have quite deliberately put a leg slip in for Steve Smith again on the basis that he might not get his balance right and just get an inside edge, or a feather on it, rather than any kind of full-blooded shot.

  16. Aus 127-3published at 48 overs

Hello. Steve Smith gets tangled up against Mark Wood, hurried by a short delivery, and he gets a smack on the thigh for his troubles.

Smith recovers well enough to push away Australia's first run of the day, before Usman Khawaja negotiates the rest of the over.

  17. Postpublished at 23:01 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2022

I'm with Geoff on this one. I do think Broad should have played at the Gabba but not neccesarily at Adelaide, and it was right to leave him out at the MCG.

    Anyway. Here's Mark Wood.

There is bit of a leap being made that if Stuart Broad had played all the Tests in this series the situation might have been different, but I don't think that's the case at all.

  19. Aus 126-3published at 47 overs

Outside off stump, a bit of shape back, and an over that started yesterday afternoon is, finally, complete.

  20. Postpublished at 23:00 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2022

Speaking of Stuart Broad, he's got one ball left to finish off his over from yesterday.
