  1. Different formats, different coaches?published at 23:57 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2022

Another thing for you to consider too.

Former South Africa batter Gary Kirsten - who was interviewed for the England head coach role when Chris Silverwood was given the job - was talking on Talksport last week.

He said he would still be interested in the job, but discussed having separate coaches, particularly in T20 cricket because of the worldwide specialists in that format.

What are people's thoughts on that? If you think it is a good idea hit the thumbs up or hit the down thumbs if you think it is a bad idea.

  2. Langer for England coach?published at 23:54 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2022

While most people are agreed that English cricket needs systematic change Chris Silverwood's position as head coach may be under threat after a run of just one win in 12 Tests before this one.

Australia head coach Justin Langer's future is also in doubt.

There has been discussions in our Teams chat this evening about whether we'd take Langer as England's next coach.

What do you think? Thumbs up for yes, thumbs down for no.

  3. 'No one has come up with the right answers'published at 23:51 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2022

Former England captain Alec Stewart was on BBC Radio 5 Live this morning and he was asked about the changes that need to be made to the county structure to make England competitive in Test cricket again.

“The timing of Championship cricket is far from ideal - everyone knows that. April, May and September are not the best months to get good quality cricket," said Stewart.

"But it’s not just that, we need to make sure that we are getting the best prepared cricketers for Test match cricket. And that’s a big challenge in itself as well and now we’ve got a fourth competition it is such a crowded itinerary that the authorities at the ECB have got such a tough job.

"But what they must not do is neglect Test cricket - that is still the pinnacle of cricket in my opinion and certainly the players opinion. We have to make sure that we are competitive and pushing to be number one in the world in all formats.

"We saw what we did with white ball cricket a few years ago when they prioritised that. Now I think we’ve got to press that reset button and make sure that we can do both - do well in white ball but we must be competitive and do well in red ball too.

"It’s a real tricky one. And at the moment no-one - including myself - have come up with the right answers."

It is still raining and there is no sign of the ground staff at all, but we do have some movement on the SCG outfield.

About thirty people - kids and adults - have just walked out, all dressed in pink for the McGrath Foundation day. They are going to unveil a huge banner by the look of things.

There's a bit of live music too. The weather can't dampen spirits too much in Sydney.

  7. 'I don't get it when bowlers overstep'published at 23:41 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2022

Australia head coach Justin Langer, speaking to BT Sport: "We're in a good position in the game, no doubt. As a batsman, I don't get it when bowlers bowl no-balls. It's disappointing when it happens because it would have been nice to have them one down overnight.

"I'm so happy for Usman Khawaja, he's so easy on the eye and as a cricket tragic, I'm just so pleased to see him do well."

You could have the five greatest bowlers of all time, give them scores of 150 and they wouldn't be able to compete. You can't win Test matches if you have no scoreboard pressure to work with in the first innings. Especially in Australia, where the wickets get worse as the game goes on.

Yeah, it hasn't got lighter. It is hammering into the TV camera that we can see from the top of the stand.

The rain is running down the lense now, which it hasn't really done all day.

The rain is still falling, but it does look like it is getting slightly lighter again.

There's no immediate sign of anything happening, though.

Stuart Broad was honest about things yesterday. I think most of us would have picked him at the Gabba. Who knows if things would have been different or not?

  13. 'Captaincy been smoother than I hoped'published at 23:26 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2022

Australia captain Pat Cummins, speaking to ABC: "The odd ball, especially in a good area, there is still a lot there. I felt like I could have nicked half a dozen and I wasn't there that long. But it isn't playing too many tricks that are going to worry you too much.

"The captaincy has goen smoother than I hoped. It has been a great three Tests and all the players have contributed. It's a really good feeling at the moment around the squad.

"Everyone is on top of their game. We've enjoyed ourselves, too. It's been an awesome few weeks."

Khawaja said yesterday that he was quite anxious about going into the break on 99, but England allowed him to get to his hundred.

  17. 'A once shy kid now emerging to the world' - Khawaja's romantic returnpublished at 23:14 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2022

    Geoff Lemon
    Australian journalist

As Usman Khawaja opened his arms to the crowd at the Sydney Cricket Ground on the second day of the fourth Ashes Test after his fine 137, those in the stands opened their arms back to him.

In part, it was the embrace of a hometown hero - Khawaja may now captain Queensland, having been born in Pakistan, but he is a Sydney boy through and through, raised in the harbour city and having done all of his professional development with New South Wales.

In part, it was the romance of the story - a Test comeback at the age of 35, having spent two and a half years not just on the sidelines but further afield than that, cut adrift during the 2019 Ashes in England and apparently superseded by younger players.

In part, it was the response to Khawaja the person, who has become much more visible over the past couple of years.

  19. 'It doesn't matter what bowlers you play if you're out for 140'published at 23:08 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2022

England bowler Stuart Broad went in off his long run during his post-play press conference yesterday.

He's had a frustrating tour, missing out in Brisbane and Melbourne. It has been a difficult tour for all the England bowlers, with them largely being let down by the batting unit.

Broad certainly wanted to make sure we all knew that was the case.

"You can dissect loads on this trip, but first-innings runs is where you live in Test cricket," said Broad.

"We've failed to deliver that. It doesn't matter what bowlers you play if you're getting bowled out for 140. That might be a bit brutal, but that's the truth in Test cricket."

    Have a read.

I like to think of myself as a brave batter but if I saw Pat Cummins running in... he looks possessed when he runs in. If I was facing him for five or overs last night I might have been just outside leg stump as well.
