Joe Root then got an absolutely horrible all from Scott Boland before Sam Billings and Ollie Pope fell in tame fashion.

They left England 107-7 and they had lost seven wickets for 39 runs in their latest dramatic collapse by this stage.

Dawid Malan, Zak Crawley and Ben Stokes soon followed as England slipped to 92-4.

I'm just going to quickly whizz through all 10 wickets so you can all hide behind a cushion and pull your hair out for one final time.

England were going very well at 68-0 before Rory Burns deflected Cameron Green back onto his stumps in the final over before tea.

  4. 'Now is not the time to talk about captaincy'published at 11:45 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

England captain Joe Root asked by Jonathan Agnew on TMS whether he will step down as captain: "I don't think now is the time to go into detail. There's a lot to discuss at the end of this series. You know how much i care about this team, being captain of the team and playing for England. I'm extremely proud of being in the position I am. That's all i can say.

"You can fish all you like, Aggers, now is not the time to go into this conversation. More than anything, I just need to digest what has happened now."

  5. 'I've not seen any improvement in 18 months'published at 11:42 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

    Sir Alastair Cook
Former England captain on BT Sport

I will be very surprised if England go to the West Indies with the same structure in place.

I'm not saying Joe Root won't be captain but we've had the same set-up for 18 months now and I've not seen any improvement.

You have to ask questions of Graham Thorpe, the batting coach, and the others.

If they lose in West Indies their positions will be untenable and there has to be change.

  6. Postpublished at 11:41 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

England head coach Chris Silverwood has just told BT Sport that he wants more parity between the Test and white-ball sides moving forward.

We'll bring you more from Silverwood soon.

  7. 'A watershed moment for England's players'published at 11:40 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

    Steven Finn
Former England bowler on BBC Test Match Special

It's a watershed moment for the England players. You have green and gold confetti over the pitch. Australia spraying champagne and you just wish it was you.

  8. Postpublished at 11:38 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

Joe Root also tells BT Sport that now is "not the time" to go into changes and what might happen as a consequence of this 4-0 series trashing.

It sounds like there will no immediate announcement about his future as England's Test captain.

  9. 'They can't keep going on like this'published at 11:37 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

    Jonathan Agnew
BBC cricket correspondent on BBC Test Match Special

For someone who loves English cricket, to stand down there and watch Australia celebrating again is absolutely bitter. It's horrible.

But they can't keep going on like this. If anyone seriously believes we can carry on like this then they're going to be utterly and completely disappointed.

  10. Postpublished at 11:35 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

"You can't win Test matches if you don't score 200 in either innings," Joe Root tells BT Sport.

    Thanks Joe.

  11. 'No obvious captaincy alternative to Root'published at 11:34 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

    Steven Finn
Former England bowler on BBC Test Match Special

Joe Root is still a young man. I still see a driven man who is one of the best five or six players in the world. I know he hasn't shown that but it's hard in a team which is getting rolled out for 150/200.

There are definitely questions to ask. I see no obvious alternative to him as captain. It will be down to him. Whether he wants to do it and have that burden on his shoulders or concentrate on his batting. Because he's carried that burden for a long time.

  12. Postpublished at 11:32 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

England have spent two or more years talking about scoring 400 in the first innings.

In 10 innings in this series they haven't scored 300 once. They have only got more than 200 four times.

There are major problems within English cricket. This will take a long time to unravel and sort.

  13. Postpublished at 11:30 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

    Geoff Lemon
Australian journalist on Test Match Special

You need to get your breath back after that Test. It was a whole match in fast forward. We had 34 wickets in two days of play - it's an extraordinary thing.

It's bitterly disappointing for England, this result in particular. It was the first time in the series you felt they were really in the game.

  14. Postpublished at 11:28 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

If England play like that they will lose in West Indies in March and they will get battered by New Zealand and South Africa this summer.

It is as simple as that.

  15. 'Foolish to think ahead to next Ashes in Australia'published at 11:28 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

    Steven Finn
Former England bowler on BBC Test Match Special

We'd be fools to think we can start thinking as far ahead as four years time to the next Ashes down under. You have to think short term and find those players capable of being there in four years. Plus it's disrespectful to the other teams you're playing in-between.

  16. 'Nobody seems able to stand up'published at 11:26 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

    Sir Alastair Cook
Former England captain on BT Sport

You get bowled out in a session once or twice in your career almost and this side we almost said it after a couple of wickets.

It is a batting line-up devoid of all confidence and belief. Nobody seems to be able to stand up and stop that slide once or two wickets are lost.

We need someone to grab this side by the scruff of their neck and do it by themselves.

  17. 'Australia were on the ropes, but England were feeble'published at 11:24 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

    Steven Finn
Former England bowler on BBC Test Match Special

The most disapointing thing is that it was such a fantastic start from Burns and Crawley. They had Australia on the ropes and the crowd were quiet.

But that was feeble from England in the end.

  18. Postpublished at 11:23 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

    Here's the winning moment.

That shot. I mean come on...

  19. 'It was appalling'published at 11:21 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

    Mark Butcher
Former England batter on BT Sport

That was ghastly it really was. I don't blame the bowlers for coming out and having a swish.

It was the epitome of the series. It was appalling.

  20. 'Great to have an impact'published at 11:20 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

Player of the match and player of the series Travis Head who scored 357 runs at an average of 59.50 with two centuries: "It's great to have an impact. This century was better than the first. The conditions, the situation we're in.

"I worked on a lot of things over last couple of years and didn't take opportunities earlier in my career. I was so eager to get back and have another opportunity. The batters in front of me have done a fantastic job and gave me the opportunities.

"Congratulations to England. It's a tough situation but thank you to everyone."
