  1. 'We are really building to something'published at 11:17 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

Australia captain Pat Cummins: "Pretty crazy. These are the series you have in your diary years out. Winning 4-0 is huge. I am really pumped.

"Not only the 11 guys playing but the 15 players in the series. It feels like we are really building to something big. To have Cam Green in his second year grow as a batter and a bowler and as well as some younger players - Travis Head, Marcus Harris and Jhye Richardson - and some of the stalwarts and old pros is just brilliant."

  2. 'Hold our hands up and say we were outplayed'published at 11:14 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

England captain Joe Root: "It's been frustrating for us. It's been a really tough tour. We've played good cricket at parts but not been able to string a game together. It's something we have to learn from as a group, from these experiences, and now go away and keep learning."

On areas to improve: "It's obvious - we need to put more runs on the board. Too often we've not given our bowlers enough to work with. We've been outplayed and credit to Australia. They deserve to win this series. Sometimes you have to hold your hands up and say a team outplayed us.

On Mark Wood taking six wickets: "It was nice to see him get the rewards. He throws everything into every performance and the ball and he was deserving of that."

There were so many quick wickets we're still playing catch-up.

Here's how Sam Billings and Chris Woakes fell.

  4. 'That has to be our rock bottom'published at 11:09 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

    Sir Alastair Cook
Former England captain on BT Sport

I actually can't believe an hour and a half to lose 10 wickets.

That just shows how much resilience there is. They showed a lot at Sydney and they must have used it all there.

That has to be our rock bottom. There can't be a worse place.

  5. 'There will be some change'published at 11:07 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

    Steven Finn
Former England bowler on BBC Test Match Special

Had England won, there would have been three or four people who would have put in significant performances in this game and there would be something to cling onto going to the the West Indies, it feels like there will be some degree of change.

  6. 'England truly outplayed'published at 11:05 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

    Mark Ramprakash
Former England batsman on BT Sport

England have been well and truly outplayed by a better opponent.

We can only hope that some of the younger players like Crawley and Pope will learn from this experience and get better.

  7. 'England haven't improved throughout series'published at 11:01 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

    Steven Finn
Former England bowler on BBC Test Match Special

Losing nine wickets in the final session is a bitterly disappointing end to the Ashes for England. Yes it's been challenging, with testing times on and off the pitch - the Covid pandemic, the weather in Brisbane - but as the series has gone on, England's performance hasn't improved.

  8. How's stat?!published at 10:59 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

    Andy Zaltzman
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

All 10 wickets for 56 runs. That's England's worst 10-wicket collapse against Australia since 1948.

Just over two hours ago England were 68-0.

They have since been bowled out in 22.4 overs.

    There are very few words.

Fair enough, Australia - well played. But if anyone is any doubt that there needs to be change in the England camp, you need to have been here to watch this game.

  11. Postpublished at 10:56 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

Ollie Robinson shuffled away outside leg stump and was stretching for a ball that hit middle stump.

A quite frankly atrocious shot, but it is in many ways a fitting way to end the series.

What a ghastly dismissal. It really sums it all up.

    Breaking

Robinson b Cummins 0 (Eng 124 all out)

    Appalling.

Australia have won by 146 runs and win the Ashes 4-0.

England have some serious work and thinking to do. Gutless.

It's just been another shattering performance. Bitterly disappointing.

I don't know what Wood was doing there. Stepped right outside off stump to hook the ball. Cummins had two catchers on the leg side anyway. Add that to the poor dismissals on this England tour.

Middle stump lies back almost comically. But there is nothing funny about this England collapse.

  18. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 38.3 overs

    Wood b Cummins 11 (Eng 123-9)

    Australia are one away!

This has been utterly chaotic from England. They do know they don't have to lose or win this game tonight, right?

Mark Wood goes outside off-stump this time and looks to pull away, but sends the ball into this stumps.

    Deary me.

  19. Eng 123-8published at 38.2 overs

    Four more!

Mark Wood backs away again and slices over cover and mid-off.

He might as well have some fun.

  20. Eng 119-8published at 38.1 overs

    Yes, Woody!

He steps outside leg and slaps Pat Cummins through the covers for four.
