Edged through the slips! Take all the luck you can, Rory.

England need to start well you'd have thought. If they can and take the shine off the new ball they can make it easier for the middle order.

It is going to be an interesting session. I'm looking forward to it. This is what Test cricket is all about - a test of character and skill.

Here we go. Rory Burns has let his locks flow out of the back of his helmet. A man with nothing to lose.

Rory Burns might be due a bit of luck - he's not had much in the series.

It is going to be a big ask. They'll need a few - if not all - of their batsman to put their hands up.

  7. Postpublished at 07:19 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

Only twice in this series have England got to 271. It would be their fourth-highest chase to win a Test in Australia.

Mark Wood's 6-37 are his best figures in Test cricket. After he was 0-74 from 10 overs in the first innings he has taken 9-78 in 24 and a half overs.

He is only the second England bowler to take nine wickets in a Test in Australia since Ian Botham did in December 1979 - Andy Caddick did it in the fifth Test in 2003 in Sydney. It is only the fifth time since 1954-55.

  9. What have you missed?published at 07:17 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

If you're just waking up, why?

I'll tell you why. This Test is approaching the end-game.

England have bowled out Australia for 155 and need 271 to win. Mark Wood took six.

The key moment? A very, very tight no-ball call when Chris Woakes bowled Alex Carey. Carey had 19 at the time, but went on to make a vital 49.

That's also nine in the match for Wood. He's bowled like the wind.

I love Mark Wood's energy and attitude. It is a shame he hasn't played more Test matches. He is a good, aggressive pace bowler.

  12. Postpublished at 07:14 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

There are 58 overs left in the day. Enough for a conclusion, you'd think.

The applause Mark Wood is getting is very well deserved. He has run in hard throughout the series and probably hasn't got the rewards that he has deserved.

Mark Wood leads England off with 6-37, his career-best figures in Test cricket.

He deserves it. He's been England's standout player in this series, ending as their leading wicket-taker.

Bowled him! Mark Wood has six-fer and England will need 271 to win.

Given the shot Pat Cummins has just played, I'd be surprised if he lasts through this Mark Wood over.

Sam Billings has become just the second England player to take five catches in an innings on debut. Chris Read also did it against New Zealand in 1999.

Well played, Alex Carey. After the reprieve he marshalled the tail well and has guided his side to a position of superiority.

There won't be any overturns or reviews on that one.

It was a good low take from Sam Billings - it wasn't the easiest catch.
